“Sir Henry Segrave”
SPEED KING TO BE KNIGHTED Triumphal Progress Prepared British Official "Wireless * Reed. 11.18 a.m. RUGBY, Friday. THE King lias approved that the honour of knighthood be conferred upon. Major Henry O. D. Segrave, who made the world land speed record of 231 miles an hour on Daytona Beach, and also won the motor-boat speed championship at Miami.
COME variation has been found necessary in the programme for the reception of Major Segrave when he reaches Southampton to-day from America. The liner Olympic, on which he is travelling, has encountered a thick
fog, and only reached Cherbourg this afternoon. She was due at Southampton this afternoon, but cannot arrive there before half-past eight this
; evening. It may be too late for Major Segrave to dine with his friends at the South-Western Hotel, as arranged, but he will join them afterwards. The enthusiasm of his welcome will, however, be in no way modified. Colonel Wilfrid Ashley, Minister of Transport, Sir Charles Wakefield, Mayor of Southampton, and others, will board the Olympic immediately she is moored, and there will be a civic welcome in a shed on the quay. A great crowd is expected to cheer the speed king. Major Segrave will, it is anticipated, be ready to broadcast the story of his triumph at a quarter-past ten, as announced. The delay of the Olympic has made a somewhat difficult task of getting the “Golden Arrow,” Segrave’s record-breaking car, to London In time for the procession to-morrow afternoon. Major Segrave and Captain Irving, the designer of the “Golden Arrow,” will leave Southampton to-morrow afternoon for London. The engine of the train will bear in front a big placard, with the words “Welcome Home, Major Segrave.”
