WEIGHTY BUT ACTIVE

MAORI MAKES THINGS LIVELY TATTERED AND TORN POLICEMAN (From Our Own Correspondent) PUKEKOIIE, Monday. With a bandaged index finger, and one arm in an improvised sling, a powerfully built Maori, weighing about 20 stone, appeared in the Police Court to-day before Mr. C. K. Lawrie, J.P., charged with disorderly conduct while under the influence of liquor. He was remanded until Wednesday. Those in King Street shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday, observed a real "Donnybrook,” the* central figures being the Maori and a police officer, who advised him to malfo himself scarce. The native disregarded the advice and did not lack the courage to make himself heard. The Maori declined to accompany the constable, with the result that forcible means were resorted to. A struggle ensued, three passersby assisting the officer. After the handcuffs had clicked on his wrists the Maori got up, and in the subsequent scuffle a plate-glass window was broken, while a battered white helmet and a tattered and torn uniform comprised the constable’s souvenirs. Accused was allowed bail in one surety ,of £lO.
