HAURAKI PLAINS COUNCIL
The Hauraki Plains County Council met on Thursday, Cr. E. L. Walton presiding Advice was received from the Public Works Department that the control of the approach road to the new Hauraki bridge had been handed to the council as part of the highway. It was decided to ask the Public Works Department to put the road in satisfactory order. The Lands Drainage Department at Kerepeehi forwarded a statement showing that the new Kaihere ferry had returned a profit on three months’ working of £4B 15s, half of which was due to the council under the agreement. It was suggested' that the money be used to provide better facilities, and the council instructed its engineer to go into the question of removing the engine and hauling gear from the Plpiroa Ferry and providing a better plant there. On Cr. Harris’s recommendation, the clerk was instructed to investigate the revoking of the special order constituting the Waitakaruru water supply district and + he constituting of a new district to embrace only the settled area.
The expenditure of a sum up to £IOO on gravel for the Patetonga riding roads, which will not be metalled for three years under the present scheme, was authorised, and. the engineer was authorised to accept the offer of the back Miranda Road Maori settlers to work out their rates on the road, it being considered that otherwise the rates would not be received.
Cr. Mayn drew attention to the spread of ragwort into the Patetonga riding from the neighbouring county, and the inspector was instructed to enforce the Noxious Weeds Act.
Advice was received that the Minister of Agriculture would visit the county toward the end of the month to investigate personally the menace of the spread of tall fescue grass.
Proposals for metalling Kaikahu Road had ben submitted to the Public Works Department, reported the engineer, and if authority were received in time the work could be started as soon as the Orchard Road was finished. Portions of the Miranda Road and of the back Miranda R.oad had been shelled, and the metalling of Ngataipua Road was proceeding slowly. All highways and clay r were receiving regular grading. u he inspector, Mr. W. White, reported that building permits totalling £I.OOO had been issued. Attention was being given to noxious weeds, and settlers were biking steps to eradicate them. Five persons had been convicted for traffic regulation breaches.
