WAIKATO DOWNED

AUCKLAND WINS BY 16 MATCHES ■ ANNUAL TENNIS MATCH The Waikato team of six men and six women was beaten by Auckland fairly easily won on Saturday. The icty ream won by 20 matches to four. Strenuous travel had been endured by several of the visitors. The Misses N. and M. Beverley, of Matamata, actually left their homes at 4 a.m. on Saturday and did not get home again until 2 a.m. yesterday. The Hamilton women proved that their standard of play was fairly high, beating the first three Aucklanders in the singles, but then were disposed of fairly easily by the city players. Brough, first man for Waikato, hit hard and served "well against Morrison, but could make little impression on the Eden and Epsom player’s solidarity in all departments. In the second set Brough struck a patch of form and led 3 —l, but failed to keep it up. Four other men’s singles were won easily by the Aucklanders, their stroke equipment being much too good for the visitors. The women did much better, Miss J. Ramsay being beaten in three sets by Miss N. Beverley, of Matamata. Going into the net and volleying beautifully. Miss Beverley played a spectacular game, after losing the first set. Miss Ramsay was solid on the back line, but the other girl's net tactics were too good for her. Miss Waters played a forceful game, slamming both hands to win in two sets against Miss Pat Miller. The second set was two-love, Mrs. Waters getting into her stride and profiting from carelessness. Miss D. Miller was leading 5—4 against the steady Miss Newell, but she lost the advantage, relying too much on her backhand. Misses M. Richardson, D.. Nexvton and J. Mueller all had good wins. Entwistle was in great form against McCracken, and he lost only one game in two sets, registering the best win of the singles. He drove and volleyed with strength and accuracy. Both V. R. and M. C. Johns played easy singles, giving displays of good tennis. At 2.45 Auckland was leading- bv 9 matches to 3. Results (Auckland names first):— MEN’S SINGLES Men’s Singles—M. M. Morrison beat G. INTER-CLUB GAMES A GRADE SEMI-FINAL REMUERA BEATS PARNELL The semi-final of the A grade competitioh between Remuera, holders of the pennant, and Parnell was the main inter-club match on Saturday. Reniuera fielded a strong team and won by seven matches to three. The champions lost only one single, Miss Marion Macfarlane being beaten by Miss Frankham in three sets. The surprise of the day was the defeat inflicted on Bartleet and isturl by Coates and Chalmers. The match was little better than a comedy, interspersed with argument about whether the club should provide new balls. Bartleet and Sturt ran away with the first set, and Bartleet then introduced the comedy element by commenting on the play of one of his opponents, who was using a lot of underspin. The second set went to Parnell, 7 —5. The third set went to 9-all, the play having been in Bartleet and Sturt’s favour, but by this time they had completely lost control of the match, and were unable to regain it.
