WATER POURS INTO SHIP
TIMBERS OPEN IN STORM BEACHED NEAR SYDNEY (United. P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) rAustralian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11.40 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. Buffeted by heavy seas, the Hunter Rh-er Company’s steamer Allyn River, of 143 tons, sprang a leak off Collaroy Beach. Her timbers opened, and water poured into the hold. The pumps were manned, but the inrush of water was too much for the crew. The captain beached the ship at Broken Bay with the water waist-deep in the en-gine-room. If it had risen another six inches the vessel would have probably plunged to the bottom. The steamer Gosford went to her assistance and transhipped her deck cargo. The Gosford later towed the waterlooged steamer back to Sydney. From the time they boarded the Allyn River on Monday until they arrived back in Sydney late last night none of the crew had had a wink of sleep.
