Review of the Kawakawa Card

MANY DUAL ENGAGEMENTS FANCY BOY’S DOUBLE If one may judge from the fine list of acceptances, then the annual meeting of the Bay of Islands Racing Club, to be held at Kawakawa to-morrow, promises to be one of the most successful in its history, and a muchneeded improvement on the past season’s gathering. The acceptances for to-morrow average nearly 11 for each race, the response from owners being gratifying. Several horses claim quite a number of engagements, and this fact makes it difficult even to attempt to name the actual races some of them will contest. The course is reported to be hard and fast, so that, with all the arrangements in the best hands, the day’s sport should be right up to standard. Special train programmes have been drawn up, and the Northern Steamship Company announces that the s.s. Clansman will leave Auckland to-day at 5 p.m., for Opua. and will leave Opua at 9.30 p.m. and Russell at 10 p.m. on Saturday, after the races. Given a run, the following horses will come in for enthusiastic support in the events named. I-lokianga Handicap—Nankin Blue and The Dansant. Kaikohe Handicap—Fancy Boy and Bombarder. Kawakawa Cup—The Thorn and Alonsoa. Northern Counties’ Handicap—Sunny Morn and lllingar. Maromaku Handicap— Bombarder and British King. Oliaeawai High-Weight—Eh Timi and Fiery Lad. Pakaraka Handicap—Fancy Boy and j Baliymoy 11. Russell Handicap—Bombarder and j British King. Of the horses given above, probably j the fittest at present is Fancy Boy, who can muster up a fine burst of speed for a few furlongs. The Thorn may be a class above the opposition

in the Cup, although Eh Timi’s form at Thames indicated that he was not altogether beyond redemption. Bombarder is in three races, and the Maromaku Handicap would appear to suit him best.

The following riding engagements are known to have been made for the Bay of Islands meeting to-morrow: I-I. Dul i eu, E h Timi ( H igh - Weigi it), and Gazerin; R. McTavish, Bombarder and The Thorn; W. Turvey, Welcome Home.

It is noteworthy that Exalted figures in no less than seven out of the eight races; he is not eligible for the other event. Bowman, lllingar and Fiery Lad are in four races, and a number of horses appear in three events.

The acceptances for to-morrow are as follow:
