Sir Roy Captures Foxton Event

SPRINT TO MILLAIS SURPRISE BY BALLOON (-Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON X.. Thursday. I Glorious weather favoured the Fox--1 ton Racing Club for the conclusion of its meeting to-day. The totalisator handled £l3, 793, against £14,738, and for the two days £31,159, compared 1 with £26,917, an increase of £4,242. The Hurdles On the strength of his first day’s performance, Deluge (£375) came in for increased support in the Hurdles, the chestnut winding up favourite from early portion, from Lin Arlington and again acted as pacemaker over the pari yportion, from Lin Arlington and Hymestrason, with the favourite running well forward. The leader stopped j quicker than usual, and at the five- : furlong post Hymestrason outjumped the Bisogne gelding to assume charge j from Rash and Lin Arlington. RoundI ing the turn for home Lin Arlington j deposed Hymestrason, with Deluge also i making a forward move, and both Hymestrason and Rash steadily drifted. In the run home Deluge finished a shade too strongly for Lin Arlington, although the Acre gelding made quite a favourable showing, a length separating them at the post. Roburant came from the clouds over the last bit to take third placing, a length and ahalf back, with another gap to Rash and Hymestrason. The Maiden The public went heavily for Disrank (£537) in the Motuiti Maiden, with Bione (£341) and Snowshoe (£197). who had run good races on the previous day, next in demand. Degree was smartest to begin at the rise of the barrier, to lead Bione, Snowshoe, Barsaloma and Disrank along the back and round the turn for home, there being little change in the leading division. Bione had taken charge at the straight entrance from Disrank and Snowshoe, but under pressurre Disrank finished on to win nicely by a length from Bione, with Snowshoe in third place a length and a-lialf back, the public selections having proved to be correct. Degree was fourth, with Otauru Lass (who was last to turn for home) ahead of Fallow and Fine Acre. Disrank had to be ridden out, but should improve, while Snowshoe should score soon. The Handicap The withdrawal of Nightmarch again caught ante-post bettors astray, while the field was further weakened by felimp declining his engagement. In the absence of the aforementioned pair Sir Roy, the stable companion of Nightmarch, was backed down to odds on, the Southerner being entrusted with £779, there being a substantial drop to Bright Day £321 and Kalos £3OO. Royal Game jumped to the iront when the field was sent on its mission, and the Royal Stag gelding was a length clear of Kalos and Bright Day as they turned into the back straight, with Twink and Sir Roy on close terms and Discourse last. Rounding the bottom turn Twink, Sir Roy and Discourse all moved forward, and the trio turned for home in behind Royal Game. The leader could not retain his position, and in the run to the post Sir Roy prevailed over Twink, who was the outsider of the field, by a shor: neck, with Royal. Game a length hack. Kalos was another length away, with Discourse ahead of Bright Day, who failed his backers badly. Wbirokino Nursery All nine acceptors went to the post in the Whirokino Nursery Handicap, an even betting race finding Acidity £328 preferred to Royal Line £3lB and Ten Acre £313. Kentish Lady jumped to the front on the tapes being released, to lead Greenfield and Ten Acre to the turn, where Tapestry joined Kentish Lady and Ten Acre ‘in the lead, with Acredity and Greenfield in behind. The leading trio fought out the issue in the run to the finishing point, Ten Acre staying on the better to win by a length from Kentish Lady, who had a-half length dvantage over Tapestry. Greenfield as fourth, with Acredity and Bon Acre :..ext to finish. Royal Line looked short of woi k, and Ten Acre won well and was much improved by bis race on the first day. Wharangi Handicap A fi-Tri of four horses was nr s nted in the Wharangi Handicap, the open sprint race for the day. Miss Fat and Lady Limond being the defections. Epistle £721 was backed down to a very short price, Callanmore £454 being preferred to Millais £159, with Helotis (almost as . well backed as the winner), the outsider of the field. Helotis jumped to the front at the barrier rise, but tlie latter steadily forged ahead and was still in the van from Callanmore and Millais ay they approached the straight, the favourite being still in the rear. Helotis was still holding the advantage over Millais at the distance, but the latter unfolded a good finishing effort to get up and win by a length from Helotis, with. Callanmore and Epistle at similar intervals. Epistle ran badly and her defeat was a severe blow to the public. Hack Cup Dermod was the sole defection from the Carnavon Hack Cup, in which the first day’s winner, Gold Cure, £627, was backed with confidence, Mister Gamp £326 and Henna £213, being next in request. An indifferent jumpout saw Gold Cure and Bissae lead Boundary racing to the turn going away from home, and the first named took command, after two furlongs had been traversed, from Boundary. Bissae. Balloon, Mister Gamp, Royal Black Aurora Borealis and Henna, with Kilorell bringing up the rear. llouding the turn Henna and iKlorell commenced to move up. but Boundary. Gold Cure and Balloon were still clear at the straight entrance. Baloon displayed his staying power when he drew out over the final pinch to win by three lengths from Henna., who came strongly from the distance, with Boundary half a length back. Then in a bunch came Bissae, Kilorell, Mister Gamp, Royal Black and Gold Cure, the favourite stopping badly. Gold Cure struck a little bad luck On Wanganui Tracks There is not much doing on the Wanganui tracks these mornings, though the weather has been fine and the tracks in good order, particularly No. 1 yesterday morning, when a little work was done, reports Wednesday’s “Chronicle.” Ceremony was stepped out to do three furlongs by himself. He slipped over the first furlong in 12 2-5, and the three in 36 3-5, doing it nicely all the way. He should be hard to head off in the Wellington Stakes next week. Lysander was sent five furlongs, taking a little over 1.2 for the journey. The first three furlongs took him 35 4-5, so it may be seen that he retains his pace. The going at Trentham will suit him better than that at the recent Ellerslie meeting. Cobham and Alloy finished in that order at the end of a brush up over three furlongs, which took them a tick under 39. They were not pushed. Mask, who has been a bit sore since his return from Ellerslie, though lie did not develop a “leg,” was given easy pace work on the inside. A nomination in the Wanganui Cup would be pleasing to record after his Ellerslie performances.

nearing home, but would, not have won. The winner was suited by the distance, and was going right away at the finish. Moutoa Handicap Monoglian and Maui monopolised the betting in the Moutoa Handicap, and they had the finish to themselves. Monoglian led to the straight, where Maui tackled him. and in a great setto Monoglian got home by a nose Vigilance was a length away third and Beaumont was next. Wilderness bled and finished down the course. Rangiotu Hack War Lille and White Ringlet were backed to short prices in thi Rangiotu Hack Handicap, with which the meeting concluded, but both were beaten, Warfille being very unlucky. Volplane was the first to turn for home from Sambur, White Ringlet and Atholspear. Warfille was dirappointed in trying for an opening on the fence, and was sent back to last. Atholspear came through in the straight to win by half a length from Warfille. who came again. Volplane was a length away third, and White Ringlet and Land Guard were next Warfille should have won easily.
