JUDGE HIGGINS DEAD
LIFE OF LAW AND POLITICS Reed. 11 a.m. MELBOURNE, To-day. Mr. Justice Higgins, of the High Court of Australia, died suddenly from a paralytic stroke at his home at Dromano, at the age of 78. He had been in good health. He is survived by his widow, his only son having been killed at the. war. The Hon. Henry Bournes Higgins was born in Ireland, and educated there and at Melbourne University. He arrived in Australia in 1870, and was called to the Victorian Bar in 1876. He was elected twice by Geelong to Parliament, losing his seat in November, 1900, because of his condemnation of the Boer War. He was a recognised authority on Equity and Constitutional Law, and he was one of those who framed the Commonwealth Constitution in 1897. He was appointed to the High Court in 1906.
