BOTTLE SMASHED CONTENTS SPLASH ON PACE Press Association CORK. Saturday. Tragic circumstances surrounded the death of Dr. A. Mathieson, resi- ■ dent woman medical officer of the j Gore Hospital, who died there to- ; day. Just after 11 o’clock this morning, Ur. Mathieson was lifting- a heavy bottle of carbolic acid, when it smashed. The acid splashed over her body and face, and immediately began its deadly work. She also suffered severely from shock, and in a short while became unconscious. Ur. Lillie was immediately called in, and resuscitation efforts were carried out. These efforts were of no avail, and Dr. Mathieson slowly sank, and died about two o’clock this afternoon. Medical opinion at the inquest was that death was due to severe shock following on the extensive skin injury, the occurrence, without doubt, being a pure accident. A verdict along these lines was returned by the coroner. Dr. Mathieson, who was aged 28, came to the Gore Hospital from Dunedin some four or live months ago, and was a very popular and efficient officer.
