Gascony Too Good for Reremoana

A HEAD BETWEEN THEM STAR AREA AGAIN SUCCESSFUL! (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON X., Thursday. The second day of the Manawatu summer fixture was held at Awapuni this afternoon in fine, but wintry weather. The course had dried a lot and was in good order. The public again found form very baffling, the bigger bettors reporting an expensive day. In common with other meetings the totalisator returns each day have slumped considerably. Yesterday’s figures were £ 33,777, against £41.333. Kelvin Handicap There were some good finishes during the day, and one of the closest was in the opening event, the Kelvin Handicap, for which Courageous £857, was preferred to Henna £720. From a walk-up start the field got away in a good line, Borsalene going to the'front from Rory Mor to lead Henna and Goldbag away from home. Borsalene and Rory Mor were on terms half a mile from home, with Goldbag, Skyrider and Henna ahead of Roburant and Courageous. Once landed into the straight Rory Mor gained the advantage over Borsalene, Henna and Courageous making late efforts, a gruelling finish finding the first four horses crossing practically in a line. Rory Mor got the verdict by a head from Henna, with Courageous and Borsalene a head further away, the former gaining third place. Courageous is running good races and his turn must come unless he trains off. To-day’s distance was just too far for Borsalene, and over a slightly shorter course she is likely to pay a dividend. High-weight Handicap The High-weight Handicap was a one-dividend race. Glena Bay was favourite. Bonhomme showed the way to Glena Bay going out of the straight, with Rouen, Novar and Thurnbell at intervals. Approaching the half-mile post Glena Bay ran to the front from Bonhomme, while Novar was fortunate enough to get a run on the rails and was in behind the leader at the turn for home. Bonhomme came again, but Novar outstayed him and won by three-quarters of a length, Thurnbell getting up to within a neck of Bonhomme. Glena Bay was fourth, and Rouen beaten off. Highden Handicap All 12 acceptors went to the post for the Highden Handicap, in which Noteworthy £985 was preferred to Black Maire £546 and Monetize £5Ol. Cloyne and Moutoa Wonder led Grand Acre from the barrier, but the latter immediately ran to the front to pilot Black Maire, Cold Air, Cloyne, Moutoa Wonder and Noteworthy. Rounding the turn for home Grand Acre was still in front, Cold Air, Cloyne and Black Maire being in line. Monetize, Shrewd and Noteworthy moved up at the distance, but Grand Acre was never seriously troubled, scoring by half a length, Shrewd getting up to take third place, half a length behind Monetize. Noteworthy was fourth and Cloyne next. Shrewd is improving. President’s Handicap

Seatown touched a short price in the President’s Handicap, being roughly twice as well backed as Mendip, Star Area or Mountain Heath, all of whom had numerous followers, while there was also good support for Keddar. The other three runners, Panther, Vivo -and Superb King, were poorly backed. Mendip soon hit the front and led out of the straight, Star Area, Vivo and Seatown being at the head of the others. Vivo rushed into the lead along the back,

led along the back from Singleton, Imperial Spark, Maui, Clarinda and Sir Roy. Before turning for home Singleton went to the front, and he was followed into the straight by Imperial Spark, Teri, Maui and Sir Roy, the last-named having to come round the whole field. Sir Roy set out after Singleton, but in the run along the short straight could not get to him. Singleton won by a length. Maui was another length away third, and Teri, Imperial Spark and Rowley close together were next. Rowley tailed the field lengths in the rear till nearing home, and did well to finish fairly close up. Awapuni Handicap The Awapuni Handicap saw Arrow Lad a slightl3 r better favourite than Niglitmarch and Silver Paper. Helotis soon got to the front and led to the straight from Silver Paper, Silver Coot, Doree and Veronese. Once in line for home Silver Paper drew right out, but Arrow Lad came from the back with a determined challenge. He gained gi'ound, but Silver Paper was kept going to win by a length and ahalf. Niglitmarch was four lengths away third, Doree fourth and Helotis fifth. Following are the results: Kelvin Handicap, of £200; 9 furlongs. —3 Rory Mor, 7.12, A. Fratus, I; 2 Henna, 8.8, K.
