Star Area keeping in close touch with the leader, and Seatown running up into third position, with Mendip next and Keddar last. Vivo entered the straight a little ahead of Star Area, with Seatown, Superb King and Mendip bunched just behind them. Star Area shot past Vivo as soon as they were fairly in line for the judge, and Keddar came strongly on the outside. Star Area had had enough at the finish, but lasted long enough to win by * a length from Mendip, who had only a head to spare from Mountain Heath. Keddar was a close fourth, Seatown fifth, and Panther sixth. Seatown had every chance. Keddar came from a long way back to finish a close fourth. Mendip is finishing on well in all his races. The Stakes Gascony £1,311 and Reremoana £1,175 monopolised the betting in the Palmerston North Stakes, and the pair had the finish to themselves. Gascony went to the front at the barrier rise from Re.remoana, with Admiral Drake and Miss Ransom ahead of Duellona. They raced in that order right to the straight entrance, where Gascony was speeded up, and Reremoana found it impossibl to gather the King John gelding in the run home, although he got to within a neck of him. Six lengths back came Admiral Drake, with Miss Ransom next. Both Reremoana and Gascony looked really well, and Taranaki’s confidence in Reremoana made the younger horse pay a very reasonable pric-e. Terrace Handicap Rory Mor and Indolent were absentees from the Terrace Handicap, Archeria £BBS, being sent out favourite from Roi de Val £590, and Toawai £462, but the placed performers came from outside the fancied division. Racing on to the course proper Full Mark was showing the way to Roi de Val, Shining Star, Patearoa and Tea Tattle, and there was little alteration rounding the top, save that Archeria and Thrift had worked forward and were in behind the leaders at the straight entrance. The favourite, however, failed to go on with it. Full Mark retaining a half-length advantage over Thrift to the post, with Roi de Val a similar distance back. Teremoana was fourth, being followed home by Archeria, Clovne and Mothplane. The winner stays on fairly well. Archeria was a little unlucky and might make amends shortly. Toawai ran a very poor race. Himitangi Handicap The unlucky horse of the Himitangi Handicap was Sir Roi. Singleton was favourite. Teri and Kilmezzo
