Played to Order

first rounds of singles

Tennis Championships

I’\ EKYTHIXG A\as played to order in the opening round i the men s singles of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis championships at Stanley Street yesterday. The women, also won their matches according to reputation. Considering the late and unpromising start the manager had done remarkably well to complete the first these events and play half-a-dozen other matches besides.

rpuE champion has not declared him- -- self in the first rounds. Bartleet •was playing shrewdly and not bursting himself against Robertson, the "kid lr om Timaru,” who played ustonishingly well. Maifroy, Laurenson and Len France had easy victories in which they more or less played as they liked. Sturt showed up aainst Grant and .seems to have struck form. Angas was using his head and keeping Watkins under control. GLANVILLE EXTENDED There was a surprise when S. J. Robinson, a Remueru player, extended Glanville, who was supposed tc be a marvel of fitness, to five sets, driving ;l strenuous fourth set out of the fire, after his opponent had a four-game lead. Glanville was uncertain before the vigorous opposition. Lampe (Wanagnui) all but missed his step in his first round against Nicholson, of Auckland, who retrieved and lobbed amazingly and covered the net. despite the slippery court, very well. Stcdman, one of Auckland’s younger hopes, accounted for Gray, and hrt strikes one of his ’Varsity clubjnates in the second round. Playing with his steel racket, Rhodes ■Williams was the only man to play two singles, and he won both of them, not with ease, but with a margin to spare. He waits for the winner of the Malfroy-Grifllths match, a game which should be attractive, for the ex-Auck-land champion is a hard man to beat. Well earned was the win of Entwistle (Remuera), against Ferkins i Wellington), who won the junior title in 1923. Three immense sets were played, the first going to 30 games. The match took over three hours, as also did the Lowry-Chisholm and the Taylor-Atmore marathons. First round byes bring Bartleet, Angas and Glanville into the third, and Rhodes Williams is there by right of conquest. CANTERBURY GIRLS Auckland had rather a slump in the women’s singles, and with the first round complete there remain only five representatives of the province. It looks as though four of them are doomed in the second. Canterbury’s five strings came through with flying colours, and Wellington has five contenders, :he remaining one being a Wanganui girl. The three top girls from Christchurch lost exactly six games between them in their first round matches. Miss May Speirs, the title holder, was responsible for the loss of one in her match with the Parnell champion, Miss M. Potter. Miss M. Wake, driving with inspiration, lost two more against Mrs. B. Napier in an excellent match to watch. Thirdly, Miss May Andrew, whose style is most impressive, dropped three games, all in the first set. to the steady Miss Delia Newton, who held the junior title in 1926. South Canterbury proved that it has a dangerous contender sure of a passage to the third round in Miss M. Gibson. South Island hard-court champion. She out-drove and out-played Miss P. Miller, of Auckland, in the first set, and in the second had half a dozen match points before she won it S —6. Miss M. Myers (Wanganui) was sure and heady in her game with Miss Marion Macfarlane. The Aucklander was reckless, outing and netting and throwing caution to the wind. Mrs. Scott-Watson failed to cone with the vigorous attack of Miss Dulcie Nicholls. She is in form, this Wellingtonian, and one of the best matches of the second round should be her game with Miss Andrew. Two games each did Mrs. Adams and Miss Tracy lose in their first rounds, accounting for two Aucklanders, Miss Whitelaw and Miss Ramsay. Mrs. Adams did as she liked, but Miss Tracy was troubled at first with Miss Ramsay’s persistent cutting. Mrs. Shroff and Mrs. Robson both played hard and good matches, but it

seems that they must go out in the next round to Miss Speirs and Miss T racy. Miss Marjorie Macfarlane and Miss Doris Howe had byes in the first, and l ‘ney should provide an interesting Same in the second. A FEW DOUBLES Late in the afternoon a start was hiade with the doubles, the only firstclass pair to play being Angas and trance, who went extremely well together to get into the second round v «th the loss of four games. Angas 'Y a * everywhere and unbeatable. Griffiths and Macintosh did not have '*■ merely instructional game again.*?t I_ ie youngsters Drew and Robertson. • he elders lost the first set and were jjcpt busy in the other three. The two Jones, Maori Association men. registered a five-set win over two Remuera Mayers, Thomson and Gregory. Additionak results: MEN’S SINGLES Mve advantage sets.
