TO REVITALISE CHESS
CHANGE IN THE RULES SUGGESTED CAPABLANCA’S IDEA Times Cable. LONDON, Tuesday. Senor Capablanea, the former chess champion of the world, recently made the suggestion that the rules of chess be altered in order to revitalise the game, by making the board 100 instead of 64 squares, and by adding two pieces to each side. One piece would have the powers of the rook and knight, the other of the bishop and knight. Mr. S. S. Blackburne, a prominent chess player, formerly of New Zealand, who also plays croquet, in a letter to “The Times,” says he has no fears that Senor Capablanca’s proposal will supersede the present game of chess. It can exist side by side witji the proposal, as has been demonstrated by the alternative methods of playing croquet.
Let those who prefer the existing form or chess, says Mr. Blackburne. continue to play it and let the aspirants to the world' championship decide whether they will follow the lines of Senor Capablanca’s proposal, or any other, provided it is given legislative sanction, and has a fair trial with properly designed pieces.
