WITH THE BOY SCOUTS

At the meeting of the Advisory/Board, which was held at district headquarters on December 5, Messrs. Keith Dyer and Alan-Tribble were appointed District Scoutmasters. The following applications for warrants were granted: Mr. J. J. Connick, Scoutmaster Tahutimai Troop; Mr. K. L. Dyer, Scoutmaster Punua Troop; Mr. D. ft. Hyde, Assistant-Scoutmaster Mt. Albert Troop; Mr. P. Big wood, Mate Vindictive Sea Scouts; Messrs. C. ft. Cockfield and W. Rodger, Assist-ant-Cubmasters Bey’s Institute Pack. Among other things it was decided to divide the district into groups, with a District Scoutmaster in charge of each group. Each District Scoutmaster will make a periodical inspection of the troops under his charge, and will advise the Scoutmasters on matters concerning Scouting. The Proficiency Badge tests will be held at St. James’s Hall on Thursday, December 13, at 7 p.rn. These are the last tests of the) year. A combined meeting of Sea Scout officers was held at District Headquarters last Thursday evening, with District Sea-Scoutmaster L. R. Thode in the chair. The Assistant Commissioner for Sea Scouts, Mr.- R. A. Woods, was also present. The Sea Scout companies were represented by the following officers: Messrs. R. Iveson, R. Hazelden and R. Hender (Calliope), L. Lees and P. Bigwood (Vindictiive), A. J. Veart and R. E. 11. Smith (Hawke), R. E. Price (Fame), and C. Foote (Victory). Christmas camps were discussed 1 and the following decisions were arrived at: The Calliope ship’s company will go aboard the Rira, anchored off Orakei; the Vindictive Sea Scouts will go to Islington Bay, and the Victory, Hawke and Fame Companies wall camp at Pine Island. Disappointment was expressed in the new Sea Scout Handbook, which embraces all classes of sea work, but no scouting. December 4, when the Hawke Sea Scouts and the All Saints’Scouts and Cubs were present. Theer was also a good attendance of parents and friends. The Leys Institute String Quartet gave some bright numbers, and Aliss Williamson sang several songs. The boys, themselves. also contributed some attractive items. The opportunity was taken to welcome the new Scoutmaster of the All Saints' Troop. Mr. H. D. Baldwin, who holds the Gilt Cross for Life Saving - , and the new Cubmaster, the R.ev. M. Heaslip. Proficiency badges were presented ‘to the following members of the Hawke Sea Scout Company: R. Wright (carpenter and clerk). T. Tierney (metal worker), S. Wilshere (carpenter and 1 year Service Star), and H. Lucas (Second Class). A dainty supper was served by the ladies of the committee. The Hawke Sea Scouts paid a visit to the Fame Company last Saturday and spent an exciting afternoon at Walker’s Beach, where the Fame Sea Scouts had a tent pitched to receive the guests. Swimming occupied the greater part of the afternoon. Sea Scouts will regret to hear that Mr. T. Cottle, the popular First Mate of the Fame Company, is- at present on the sick list. Patrol Leader C. called at Scout Headquarters recently. He is a member of the Third Wallasey Troop of Sea Scouts, of Cheshire, England. Wallasey is not far from where the 1929 Jamboree is to be held. Twelve members of the Punua Troop, under Scoutmaster K. Dyer hiked to the Waitake.res last Saturday and spent the night at Pukematekeo in the concrete cottage. They returned on Sunday, taking the train from Swanson. The Punua Cub Pack will hold its breaking-up ceremony next Thursday evening, but the meetings of the troop will be continued as usual. The annual report and balancesheet of the Dominion Executive shows the number of Scout officers Boy Scouts, Wolf Cubs, Sea Scouts and Rovers, for the scouting year just to be lx - 04 3. as against IU.oJo for the previous year. There are now 2G6 troops, 170 packs and 14 Sea Scout companies in the Dominion. A team of Tauranga Boy Scouts took part in the ambulance competition at the Paeroa Agricultural Show and won the Scott Cup by 2 points. The team comprised Scouts R. Castles, J. Murdock, K. Mackrell and ±l. Reno. During their visit the boys were very hospitably treated by the Paeroa Boy Scouts.
