PONSONBY’S GOOD LEAD Victoria fared much worse than Ponsonby, which scarcely impressed with its first innings’ strike of 167. The Victorians’ first strike realised the very poor tally of 49. Barnes was the man responsible for the wholesale collapse of the new team. Maintaining an excellent hligtk, he took six wickets for 26 runs—one of the best bowling performances of the season. Nicklin also lent a hand, and took two wickets. Stallworthy and Williams were the only Victorians to struggle into double figures. Taken all round, the match was disappointing. Both sides could not get used to the wicket. Ponsonby shaped only fairly, and Victoria collapsed badly. It was a day out for the bowlers. The Victorians made a mistake by keeping Stallworthy and Dickson on as bowlers when nine Ponsonby wickets Were down for 105. Both men tired, and Withers and Cooper put on 62 for a last-wicket partnership. Several good bowlers were waiting their turn. Barnes deserves all praise for his fine bowling for Ponsonby, which had visions of a difficult struggle with the opposition batting. Cooper scored 36 for the Ponies in a somewhat hurried fashion, Withers (30), Spicer (21), and Barnes (9) being the next best. No Victorian passed these scores.
