MUNICIPAL CONCERT

CAROL PROGRAMME There was an appropriate Tuletide atmosphere surrounding the concert .given by the Municipal Choir on Saturday evening. Choir items, organ numbers and other solos all dealt with Christmas themes, and the revival of many old-time favourites was warmly appreciated by an audience of much larger proportions' than usual. In wishing the audience a merry Christmas, on behalf of the choir, Mr. Maughan Barnett referred to the recent controversy regarding municipal music, and expressed the hope that a more successful year would result in 1929. On the grand organ Mr. Barnett played Guilmant’s “Offertoire Upon Two Christmas Themes," a fantasia upon “Glory to the New Born King,” “Pastorale,” by Claussman, and Beethoven’s “Minuet." All items were well received. Items by the choir were also much appreciated. They included “Welcome Yule,” “The Holly and the Ivy,” and The First Nowell.” Appropriate effects were obtained by a well-bal-anced combination. Solo items by Miss Mina Caldow also added to the enjoyment of the programme.. “The Oxen,” “A Legend,” by Tschaikowski, “Shepherd’s Cradle Song,” and “For the Years To Come,” were all popular numbers.
