STONES FROM WHEELS

WINDOWS BROKEN AT TAKAPUNA “SILENT POLICEMAN” BLAMED Shop windows at Hauraki Corner, Takapuna, have suffered considerb f damage recently from road metal hurled from the wheels of passing vehicles. A silent policeman was installed a few weeks ago at the corner where the concrete road is narrowed down to half the full width of the thoroughfare, the remainder having been originally occupied by the tram track. In the past, traffic both ways almost invariably clung to the concrete, causing dangerous congestion. To remedy this the Takapuna Borough Council had the silent policeman installed in order to divert the traffic into two streams. The lightly ballasted macadam portion has rapidly disintegrated under the tyres of the fast-moving motored loose stones have been hurled pretty freely. The shop windows on the seaward side of the road have presented an eqsy target for these missiles arid practically every one has teen either broken or cracked. Shopkeepers affected intend to demand that the road be tar-sealed, also that reasonable compensation be paid to them.
