FETE AT TAKAPUNA

COMMUNITY EFFORT TO RAISE FUNDS BEAUTIFYING BOROUGH About 3,000 spectators assembled at the floral fete at Taharoto Park, Takapuna, on Saturday afternoon. It had been organised by a committee representative of the Takapuna Borough Council and the Ratepayers’ Association of the district in order to raise funds for the beautification of the borough, and the success of the fete should give the movement great impetus. The carnival was a most spectacular display, and was a fitting culmination to several weeks of organising work. « The number of entries in the competitions for various classes of decorated vehicles was not large, but in the majority of cases considerable artistry was displayed. The grand parade proved particularly effective, some of the prams and go-carts, and also the children’s exhibits, being exceptionally well designed and artistically carried out. Displays of physical drill and folkdancing by 1,500 children from the Takapuna Grammar School and the Belmont and Takapuna Primary Schools also contributed to the pleasure of the carnival. Demonstrations were also given by the Takapuna Fire Brigade and the surf and life-saving clubs of the borough. An attractive feature of the massed display was Messrs. John Court, Limited’s, Christmas tableaux. On a decorated wagon a team of real reindeer was to be seen attached to a wellladen sleigh. Both to children and adults it was a most interesting exhibit. It is expected that somewhere in the vicinity of £7O will be the amount realised by the carnival, and application will be made to have the proceeds subsidised £1 for £1 bv the Government.
