FILMS AND THE STUDIOS

_ ♦ ♦ RIENDLY GESIVRES—--17 is generally admitted by the British film industry that in pursuing a policy of more enterprise and superior productions it has had no better incentive than the generous sympathy of film importers in the Dominions ana Colonies. Australia is making a fine gesture of encouragement and support. says the "Daily Mail.” Next February the Commonwealth Government will pass the most comprehensive code of legislation ever adopted for the regulation of the film industry. Among the clauses will be one requiring Australian exhibitors to show at least ten Kmpire-produccd “ feature” films in the first year of a new compulsory quota system, 2D in the second, and 30 in the third year. Two pieces of advice are given by the Australian authorities to Britain —that agencies should be established in Australia, and that, in view of the large number of British productions rejected by the Australian censorship, the British censorship should be strengthened to meet Australian requirements. This review might have mentioned also New Zealand. Our exhibitors have undertaken to show voluntarily a goodly proportion of British films. As time goes on this voluntary quota is sure to be increased.
