CRAFTSMANSHIP DISPLAY

MANUAL TRAINING SCHOOL The students at Devonport Manual Training School held an exhibition of craftsmanship in woodworking to-day. Many visitors commented on the excellence of the work and congratulated the instructor, Mr. F. J. Layzell, on the efficiency of his control. This school caters for the boys attending Devonport, Stanley Bay, Vauxhall, Belmont and Takapuna public schools, over 300 pupils attending the classes. It has a further interest in educational circles in that it was the first technical school in Auckland City and was organised by the late Mr Bartley, a prominent architect. Among the boys singled out for commendation for completed work were S. Somerville, of Devonport. who made a dinner wagon, and J. Williams, of Belmont. The inclinations of the boys vary greatly. While ojie boy makes" a bookcase for his home, another manufactured a model of the ancient “stocks.’ others had seemingly inherited the farming instinct, models of barn constructions and gates being their fancies. Included in the exhibit were replicas of scientific apparatus such as lever machines, balances, etc.
