HOLIDAY HURTS

W ith a family of small children it would be an exceptional experience to get through the holiday without one or two niinor mishaps. Flies and dust will get into small eyes. If the trouble is below the lower lid, pull it gently down, w-hen the foreign matter usually can be seen and removed witb the twisted corner of a handkerchief. If the upper lid smarting, bring the lid gently forward and over the lower lid, then the lashes of the latter have a chance to sweep away the dust. Unusual food, and perhaps more ices and soft drinks than they are accustomed to, often upset small “tummies” on holiday. Rest both for body and digestion is a safe cure. A ■little bicarbonate of soda in warm water will help matters, and some fluid magnesia as an aperient will usually suffice to put matters right. A little child will be intensely frightened by an insect in the ear. It is an unpleasant experience even for an adult. In the flurry of the moment one must not be tempted to get the creature out by probing for it. The simple and harmless way is to pour a little olive oil into the ear. On this the intruder will very quickly float out. Gnat bites are a commonplace. Ammonia Is the best antidote, and since it may be purchased in solid form, it is easy to carry a stick in the pocket or handbag. As a preventive, one cannot do better than dab the children’s faces, hands, and legs with a lotion made from half a drachm of pennyroyal mixed with two tablespoonfuls of eau de Cologne. Heat bumps cause intense irritation to little people, and the discomfort may be lessened by dabbing them with carbonate of soda and water. The diet should be simplified as well.
