MRS. MARGARET WALSH Mrs. Margaret Walsh, who died at her home in Avondale on Wednesday at the age of 87, was born in County Killarney, Ireland. She came to New Zealand in the ship Northern Bride accompanied by her husband and one child. The family went to Keukapakapa, where they had been allotted a Government grant of a 40-acre freehold. They farmed there until Mr. Walsh retired in 1911, when they removed to Avondale. Mr. Walsh died in *1914. Of a family of nine, Mrs. Walsh is survived by three daughters, Mrs. O’Ryan and Miss Walsh, of Avondale, and Mrs. W. Brown, of Auckland. CAPTAIN M. SILLARS A well-known master in the New Zealand coastal trade, Captain Siilars, master of the Westport Coal Company’s steamer Canopus, died at his home in Lyttelton yesterday morning after a short illness. Born in Scotland, Captain Siilars came to New Zealand and about 20 years ago joined the Canopus as a junior officer. He rose to the position of chief officer and then Went on shore duty at Lyttelton. About 12 years ago he rejoined the Canopus as master, a position he held until his death. Taking ill on the last trip of the Canopus to Westport, Captain Siilars went to his home and the vessel was brought to Auckland by the chief officer, Mr. T. Rowlands. Captain Sillars was held in high respect by his friends and acquaintances throughout New Zealand and his death will be much regretted. MR. JAMES ROUSE Mr. James Rouse, of Hukurenui, who has died at the age of 56 years, was born at Kamo and practically all his life liad lived in the district. He -had engaged in farming and bush contracting and up to the time lie was taken hi h • was farming at Hukerenui. He had been a director of the Hikurangi Dairy Company. Mr. Rouse is survived by his wife, four scxns and six daughters. MR. R. GRIFFITHS The death of one of the oldest and best-known residents of the Northern Wairoa, Mr. David R. Griffiths, occurred at Dargaville yesterday. Mr. Griffiths, who was 65 years of age. was a resident of Dargaville, and was a bootmaker up till about IS months ago, when failing health compelled him to relinquish business. He was a member of St. George Masonic Lodge, 1601, E.C., and took a very keen interest in its affairs. Pie is survived by a widow.

THE REV. E. B. WETHEY

The death occurred recently at Dunedin of the Rev. Edward Brewer Wethey, at the age of 75. Born in London, Mr. Wethey was educated at Bristol and came to New Zealand in 1875, arriving at Auckland by the stearner Ocean Mail. He joined the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, and held positions at Christchurch, Timaru, Akaroa and Tapanui. On retiring from the bank Mr. Wethey gave his whole time to the Church, and on being ordained was appointed to the charge of Portobello, where he remained for a short time, later being appointed vicar at Warrington, Seacliff and Waitati. He was at the last place for 10 years. Mr. Wethey is survived by his wife, four sons and one daughter. MR. A. W. SEDCOLL Mr. A. W. Sedcole, one of the earliest settlers, has died at Pahiatua. He was closely identified with the pioneering days.—P.A.

MR. J. E. FULTON

Mr. James Edward Fulton, aged 73, one of the best known engineers in the Dominion, who has for eight years been manager and locomotive superintendent of the Wellington-Manawatu railway, has died at Wellington. He designed and built the Kiel burn tramway system, Wellington, and built many bridges for the Government and local bodies all over New Zealand. Mr. Fulton retired from business in 1926. He leaves a widow and one daughter.—P.A.
