S. G. SMITH IS STILL A MATCH-WINNER IN AUCKLAND CRICKET
r rHE years have dealt lightly X with S. G. Smith, the former West Indies and Northamptonshire all-rounder, who, on the eve of his 48th birthday, is still one
of the best cricketers i n Auckland. Last Saturday he registered one of the best p e r f o rmances of his career, taking six wickets for 29 runs for Ponsonby against Suburbs, and knocking up a bright 77 not out. At times, his fielding shows signs of having deteriorated, but on Saturday he took two nice catches in the slips, so that he really accounted for eight out of ten wickets in Suburbs’ first innings. As a slow, spin bowler, he is still among the best in the land. He flights the ball so cleverly and varies his pace and direction so well that he is still capable of going through a side, even when better-known bowlers on the side have failed to dislodge the earlier batsmen. In his last three innings at the bowling crease, his figures read: 5/85, 7/90 and 6/29, or an average of 11.33 for 18 wickets.
