FILLER CAP CAN DO IT Aside from the possibility of losing the gas tank filler cap, it pays to be careful where it is placed when removed. The filler cap can stall the engine! Suppose, for instance, the cap is placed on the ground or on the running board where there may be cakes of mud or oily dirt from the garage floor. Suppose the small hole in the centre of the cap is plugged with this dirt? This hole, though scarcely more than a pinhole, is a vital part of the vacuum system used on the majority of makes of cars. It is a vent for the rear tank and is indispensable to the fuel system. Many eur owners are sceptical of this. One way to learn the truth is to stick a piece of chewing-gum over the hole and drive along until the vacuum tank goes dry.
