NEGOTIATIONS LAPSE NO AUSTRALIAN ADVICE Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day.
The New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association has decided to cancel arrangements made with Australia for a tour of the Dominion by Johnnie Weismuller, of Illinois, world’s champion sprint swimThis decision is due to the fact that the Australian , —o . has not been able to , give definite information as to whether Weismuller is coming to New Zealand. Swimming Officials in Auckland were prepared for such an announcement. While the Auckland Swimming Centre made arrangements in readiness for a visit from Weismuller, it urged the x**w Zealand Association to secure definite information from the Australian Union. At last week’s meeting, the centre was emphatic that it would not commit itself, particularly when it was not known for certain in New Zealand whether Weismuller had accepted a position as a j swimming coach in Japan. If the reI ports that he has done so are correct, ■ Weismuller will not be able to compete with amateurs. Had he been brought fo New Zealand after accepting a coach’s position, he would have been able to give demonstration swims only. Since the announcement that a tour by Weismuller was likely, the New Zealand Association has been flooded wijLh applications for carnivals.
