TIMARU CLUB HAS POOR MEETING

SMALL FIELDS PARADED HANDICAP TO BEAU GESTE (Special to THE SUE) TIMARU, Saturday. The South Canterbury Jockey Club concluded its summer meeting at Washdyke to-day in glorious weather. There was a good attendance, and the track was in fast order. The totalisator was again well down to-day. the decrease for the two days being £6,693 10s. Levels Hurdles Erin-go-Bragli. the winner of the Levels Hurdles, was always in the van, and after leading into the straight he drew out and beat Tunamoe by a length. The favourite, Troilus, was two length away third, and then came Shandre. Bonatic hit the first hurdle very hard and dislodged his rider. Claremont Hack As a result of his easy win on opening Day, Bank Draft was backed down to a short price for the Claremont Hack Handicap, but he never looked a possibility over the last furlong. When the Held settled down Page Boy took charge, and after lead-» ing into the straight he easily beat Royal Flower by two lengths. Filosel, who ran her best race to date, was half a length further away third, and was followed home by Impertinence. Page Boy won with the greatest ease, and is so well just now that he should again be difficult to beat at his next start. The Handicap Battle Colours was a hot favourite for the South Canterbury Handicap, but he let his supporters down badly and failed to gain a place. He had every chance, and at the home turn looked to have the race in safe keeping. But soon after straightening up for home he stopped badly and eventually was the last horse to pass the post. Gay Sonnet essayed to lead all the way, but Beau Geste, who was ah ways nicely placed, ran past her 150 yards from the post and went on to beat Prickles by a length. Vaward was fourth. Prickles was rfdden a shocking race, and was a good thing beaten. Juvenile Handicap Backers would not hear of the defeat of Desert Song in the Juvenile Handicap, and they sent him to the post a hot favourite for the two-year-old race. However, he was not ridden with the best of judgment and was defeated in the last stride by Night Lad. Captivate was third and Colonel Quex next. Night Lad, who was having his first run. put up a smart effort, and gives every indication of developing into a good youngster. Stewards’ Handicap In a three-horse field Quarterdeck was backed down to a short price for the Stewards’ Handicap, but she never looked a winner at any stage and was beaten into third place. Gold Brick, who was admirably handled by L. J. Ellis, went to the front from the start and comfortably defeated Money Mine by a length and a-half. Quarterdeck was very sore, but should soon do better. Trial Handicap Toawai -was well back in the early stages of the Trial Handicap, but he came through with a great burst of speed in the straight, and in. an exciting finish beat Uproar by a neck. Full Flight was a length away third, fol-

lowed by Singer. Toawai is bound to improve with racing and should be worth following at the Christmas and New Year meetings. He will probably accompany First Sight to the Manawatu fixture. Kingsdown Handicap Tardy finished fast in the Kingsdown Handicap and got up in time to beat Arrowy by a short head. Zeuxis was two lengths away third, and then came Money Peer. Farewell Handicap The fixture concluded with the Farewell Handicap, which was a good betting race. Money Order hopped out smartly, but after showing the way to Receipt at the distance, he petered out in the run home. Some Rose finished well over the last 100 yards, and beat Eaton Bells by a length. Receipt was a similar distance away third, with Money Order next.
