Three Killed When Car Falls 60 Feet
THREE OTHERS INJURED TRAGEDY NEAR COROMANDEL (From Our Oicn Correspondent) THAMES, To-day. Thrown from a err over a 60foot bank, three people were killed and three others injured on the Manaia Hill, near Coromandel, yesterday afternoon. The killed and injured were: KILLED Mr. Wilson, sen., father of the driver Mrs. Wilson, wife of Mr. W. Wilson. Jessie Wilson, aged two years, daughter of Mr. and M.rs. W. Wilson. INJURED Mr. W. Wilson, injured shoulder and shock. Mr. B. S. Carroll, fractured ribs and bruises. Margaret Wilson, aged six years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Wilson, slight injuries. Mr. Wilson, sen., whose home is at Devonport, had been staying with his son. The family had made up a party to visit Mr. Frank Shepherd, mine manager of the Hauraki Gold Company, at Coromandel. In the car in addition to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson were their two little daughters, and Mr. B. S. Carroll, Government engine-super-visor at Price’s Foundry. After covering five miles of the homeward journey, at a dangerous part of Manaia Hill, the car slipped into a deep rut at the side of the .road. The driver, thinking another car was approaching, pulled to one side. He endeavoured to force the car from the channelling under its own power, but the wheels skidded and the vehicle suddenly bounded over the bank, dropping 60 feet into a paddock. Mr. Wilson, jun., crawled some distance for assistance. The injured people were hastened to the Coromandel Hospital. M.r. Wilson, sen., and Mrs. Wilson were killed outright. The little girl, Jessie, aged two years, died shortly after admission. Mr. Carroll was injured about the legs and had several ribs fractured. Mr. Wilson, jun., is suffering from injuries to his shoulders and body. The other little girl, Margaret, is seriously injured. Mrs. Wilson is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Clarke, of Thames. The car, a new limousine which Mr. Wilson had recently purchased, was damaged beyond repair.
