Twenty Crews Race For Barrett Cup

INTER-CLUB ROWING WIN FOR WEST END Brilliant sunshine and a strong muster of crews from the four city clubs did much to ensure the success of the North Shore Rowing Club’s ••At Home’* and opening function held at the club house on Saturday afternoon. The chief attraction, which drew a record crowd of club supporters and rowing enthusiasts, was an inter-club competition for the Barrett Cup. Twenty crews from the five clubs took part, the course being from the Sheerlegs to a point off the boathouse. Mr. G. Barrett acted as judge and starting was by mutual consent except in the final cup race. Bach club rowed its own trials first for club trophies, the winning crew meeting the finalists of the other clubs in the cup race. Water conditions were excellent in the early afternoon, but a stiff southerly breeze made the water choppy later in the day. Mr. Alexander Harris, M.P., for Waitemata, and club patron, declared the season open, Mr. X). W. McLean life member and past president of the club also speaking. The Barrett Cup final was won by West End in an exceptionally spirited finish. The crews were: North Shore—D. Davies (stroke), Seagar S. Challinor, H. First Heat—Ross beat Eaddy by six lengths. Second Heat —Bygate beat Stacey by two lengths. Final—By gate beat Ross by two feet—a great finish. Bygate was about two lengths back with 100 yards to go, when, tailing on his men he put in a great spurt. He was aided to victory by Ross having to go out off his course to avoid an obstacle. NORTH SHORE Shore trials were rowed for the W. C. Cameron trophy. First Heat —Dean beat Jackson by half a length. Second Heat—Davies beat Follas by two lengths. Final.—Davies beat Dean by threequarters of a length. This result makes Davies's crew holders of the president’s trophy for the seaST. GEORGE'S The Rowsell Memorial Fours were raced *y St. George's in deciding their trials. First Heat—Hargreaves beat Woolhouse by two lengths. Second Heat.—Simons beat D’Authreau by two lengths. Final.—Simons beat Hargreaves by half a canvas. WAITEMATA Subscription fours were rowed by Waitemata in elimination trials. First Heat—Reid beat Brooker by two lengths. Second Heat—Barker beat Cruickshank by two feet. Final.—Barker beat Read. Read broke the roller of the front seat early in the race. WEST END The fate of the Kohn Shield was decided by the West End trials. Only three crews entered, all rowing in the one heat. MeFarlane beat Haylock by two lengths with Strange a further two lengths back third. WEST END S CUP The crews of MeFarlane (West End), Bygate (Auckland), Davies (North Shore), Parker (Waitemata), and Symons (St. George’s) met in the Cup race. After some difficulty the crew's were sent away with Waitemata slightly in the lead. West End challenged and went to the front, Waitemata dropping back to third place and allowing Auckland to come up to second. Off Ventvor Waitemata dropped back another place. North Shore coming up to the third position. Though forced hard by Auckland, West End hung on to its advantage long enough to win a most exciting race by two feet. Shore was a length back third.
