BRISBANE, Sunday. The English cricketers commenced a match against Queensland yesterday at Brisbane.- There were 12,000 spectators. The weather alternated between cloudy and sunny and the temperature was about 75 degrees, with a light breeze. The wicket was somewhat slow and patchy, and inclined to give a false idea of pace. When stumps were drawn the local side were all out for 116 runs, and had dismissed of the visitors for 112. O’Connor won the toss and he and Gough opened Queensland’s first innings. Gough hit one from Hammond for four, provoking tumultuous cheering. Geary’s bowling was not impressive, being short-pitched and laboured. Freeman, who has a curious flattening out action when he is delivering a ball, was tricky all through. The fielding was smart and Chapman gave some clever displays. The Queenslanders’ batting was patchy and uncertain, except for brief intervals. Chapman kept changing his bowlers at both ends and only 58 runs were scored in the first hour. INTENSE EXCITEMENT Three wickets fell, in 13 minutes, beginning with that of O’Connor, who, with Thompson, made the best stand. Hammond did not look a dangerous bowler for the first test match, but White created a great impression. Just prior to 4 p.m. the Queenslanders’ innings finished. Hobbs and Sutcliffe opened for England after tea. They knocked up half a century in 37 minutes. Hobbs was caught brilliantly by Rowe at second slip. A few minutes later, amid frenzied cheers, Sutcliffe was caught by Thompson at cover. His 34 had been made in 44 minutes. The spectators roared when Hammond was caught by Litster before he had scored. The game became thrilling beyond description when, like lightning, O’Connor, behind the wickets, picked up a ball which had been tapped by Tyldesley and skittled the stumps before Mead could reach the crease from the other end. O’Connor also caught Chapman smartly. The English captain had made 35 runs in 47 minutes. .Details of the scores are:— QUEENSLAND First Innings O’CONNOR, c Hobbs, b White .... 25 GOUGH, c Mead, b Freeman .... 9 NOTHLING, st Ames, b Freeman . .
