SCREEN STARS ARE ACTORS
FAVOURITES COME FROM STAGE It is a surprising fact that 75 per cent, of tho stars and featured players of tho motion picture world of to-day started their careers behind the footlights of the legitimate stage. Some people have the impression that a stage player will rarely make a good motion picture artist, but they are nnsr taken. Many of the stars and players at the Paramount studios, for example, not only started on the stage, but were bcrn under the glare of the footlights. Bebe Daniels and Esther Ralston were two sucli examples. Richard Dix and Douglas Mac Dean were matinee idols in stock companies. Both Adolphe Menjou and Neil Hamilton served their apprenticeship in similar circumstances. Wallace Beery starred in musical comedy. Louise Brooks and James Hall were Follies artists. George Bancroft was one of Broadway’s best known actors. William Powell made a name for himself in “Going Up,’’ and Clive Brook graced tiie London stage. Emil Jannings, tho great German star who is now engaged in filming “Bins of the Fathers” for Paramount, appeared for years on the stages of the principal Berlin legitimate theatres.
