PORTRAIT OF CHRIST

MODERATOR'S WORDPICTURE IDEAL OF SERVICE A word-picture of Christ was I drawn from the Gospels by the Rev. Professor W. Hewitson, Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly, in his sermon at St. David's last evening. Jesus was a masterful man, he said; there were a thousand incidents in the Scriptures which showed his strong personality. But with this he was a man who knew ljiow to serve and how to be a friend. He realised that His throne in Heaven rested on His cross, His mastership on His servantship. “Master, friend and servant, Jesus left an example for us to follow,” said the professor. “Authority which is not based on servantship is useless. A minister with authority and nothing else would soon have only a thin con* gregation. He must be a friend to all his people. Some wonder at the fact that the British Throne is still so firmly established, but the reason is not difficult to find. We believe that our King works for and is the friend of his people. The Pope, the greatest dignit;ary of the Christian Church, has, as his title, ‘the servant of the servants of God.’ The little woman in the home, with the quiet voice—she rules the home and she rules by her service to husband and family.” Christianity to-day, if it was to be worth the name had to be a life of service to others. The moderator commended a deeper study of the life of Christ to all Christians; there was a great need of such study in the world to-day. ASSEMBLY SUNDAY From Helensville to Pukekolie yesterday, Presbyterian churches celebrated “Assembly Sunday” and visiting minitsers preached in about 20 churches. A special missionary meeting will be held in the Town Hall this evening. The moderator will preside and addresses will be given by the Rev. George Budd, the Rev. J. G. Laughton and the Rev. J. M. McKenzie. “SOUL AND BODY” CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH IGNORANCE AND SCIENCE “Soul and Body” was ,the subject of wesson- Sermon in the Christian Science Church yesterday, the Golden Text being taken from Philippians ilii: 20, 21. “Our conversion is in Heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ; who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself.” Among the citations which comprised the Lesson-Sermon was the following Irom the Bible: “And Joshua said unto the people, ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the Lord, to serve BBm. And they said, ‘We ere witnesses.’ Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the Lord God of Israel. And the people said unto Joshua, ‘The Lord our God will we serve, and His voice will we ob.ey.” (Joshua xxiv: 22-24). The Lesson-Sermon also included the following passage from the Christian Science text-book, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” by Mary 'Baker Eddy: “The only excuse for entertaining human opinions and rejecting the Science of being is our mortal ignorance of Spirit—ignorance which yields only to the understanding of . Mvine Science, the understanding by which we enter into the kingdom of truth on earth and learn that Spirit i- infinite and supreme” (p. 281). ST. PATRICK’S FAIR CABARET AND DANCE St. Patrick’s fair, which was held at the Town Hall during the past week for the purpose of reducing the Grey Lynn debt and the debt on St. Patrick’s School, concluded on Saturday evening. The fair had a successful run, the many novelty features making appeal to the public, and at the same time swelling the revenue. The financial results are satisfactory, but the totals are not yet available, because each group reckoned up its individual receipts, and it will be several days before the general balance is ascertainable. On Saturday evening a long cabaret carnival was held, the hall being ‘thronged with jolly dancers, bringing a successful carnival to a picturesque end.
