A Big Dividend

RAMBLIN’ KID SURPRISES Racing at Te Kuiti in Rain (Special to THE SUX) TE KUITI, To-day. BACKERS sustained a severe reverse in the opening event at Te Kuiti to-day, the little-fancied Ramblin’ Kid, eleventh in the betting order, winning the first event and returning a dividend approaching a third of a century. There was only £2O 10s invested on him. The weather was showery, there was a fair attendance, and the track in good order.

h ollowing are the results: — PIO PIO HACK HURDLES Of £120; 1 mile 5 furlongs 11 —RAMBLIN’ KID (J. Wills), br g by Winterbourne—St. Crispin— : Lady Phyllis mare, f aged, 9.0, C. Won by six lengths, third horse a couple of lengths away. Time, 2.59. Winner trained by H. Barr. General Rose was the only defection from the opening event, and the first day’s winner, Star of the East, and Stormy had an interesting duel for favouritism, and they wound up carrying £22S and £217 respectively, with a drop to £l3B on Lady Spalpeen. The eventual winner, Ramblin’ Kid, was neglected, the amount invested on him being only £2O lbs. Stormy nearly crashed at the first fence and then ran in the rear throughout, and Ah Wera was almost down at the second obstacle. Tinopono was the first over the initial obstacle from Hangawera and Town Hall, and with part of the journey covered the order was Tinopono, Highflown, Terrapeen, Star of the East, Abbot’s Delight and Archeen. Passing the stands Highflown held a small advantage over Tinopono, with Star of the East, Terrapeen, Hangawera and Lady Spalpeen following. Down the back Star of the East had taken up the running, being attended by Hangawera, Tinopono, Lady Spalpeen and Ramblin’ Kid. The last-named made a fast run crossing the top and was actually the first into the straight from Star of the East, Lady Spalpeen, Highflown and Tinopono. Ramblin’ Kid was always doing it nicely in the run home and he came on to win by half a dozen lengths from the consistent Lady Spalpeen, who finished a couple of lengths in advance of the favourite. Tinopono was fourth, and the next over the line were Highflown, Master Arch and Abbot’s Delight. TRIAL HANDICAP Of £100; 6 furlongs 6—SULLA (W. H. Monetize £254 was a good favourite, others to come in for fair support being Rose Arch £l6l and Te Taone £143. Ossian and Sulla began brilliantly, but when they had settled down Cloud Bank held command from Upoko, Flying Tresses, Te Taone, Rose Arch and Sulla. Cloud Bank was still the pilot crossing the top. his nearest attendants being Te Taone, Flying Tresses. Rose Arch, Upoko and Archeval. Cloud Bank was the first to turn for home, followed by Te Taone, Archeval, Rose Arcln and Sulla. The last named finished much more generously than hitherto and beat the outsider Archeval by half a length. A head away was Arcliileen, who came from well back, and she was followed in order by Te Taone, Prince Val, Swif flight, Upoko, Cloud Bank and Monetize. The last named was never travelling like a winner at any stage. The second horse had only £27 invested on him and paid nearly double figures for his dividend. He is owned by the president of the club. Mr. H. Rothery, who also races Glendo wie. WAITOMO HANDICAP Of £250; nine furlongs 3 MERVETTE (J. Fraser Smith), b.m. by Lucullus—Bray ton, syrs, 7.5, C. Waitomo was still m charge crossing the top from The Thorn, King Smock, Te Koroke, and Mervette, the last named making a forward move here. Tinokoa led into the home stretch from The Thorn, Xing Smock, and Mervette. At the bottom of the straight Mervette and King Smock were in the van, the former drawing away, to win by a length from King Smock, with a length and a-half back to The Thorn. Brampton was the only withdrawal from the Maniapoto Hack Cup, and The Loved £4lB was always favourite, whilo there was only modest support for anything else outside of Leitrim £363, a few friends sticking to Speechless £195 and Glena Bay £l2l. Arch Queen led past the stands and out of the straight from Leitrim, The Lover, Whaka King, Speechless and Glenstar, and down the back Arch Queen was joined by Leitrim, the pair being clear of Whaka King, Speechless, The Lover and Roman Abbey. Crossing the top Leitrim had forged into the lead, The Lover having run up into second place, with Arch Queen, Speechless and Whaka King next and Star Comet coming fast. The Lover was the first to turn for home, attended by Leitrim, Speechless, Arch Queen, Whaka King and Star Coifiet.
