FIRE AT BIRKENHEAD
DESTRUCTION OF HOUSE OCCUPANTS AWAY FROM HOME A settee was the only thing saved when a five-roomed wooden house, and contents, were destroyed by fire in Palmerston Road, Birkenhead, yesterday morning. The property was owned and occupied by Air. H. Lamb, who with his wife and two children were away for the week-end. The alarm, which was given by Constable Bishop to Fireman Ward, of the Northcote Fire Brigade at 1.5 a.m., brought a quick response from the Northcote Brigade, which was on the scene in 13 minutes with a full muster of firemen. The journey on the motor-engine from Northcote occupied eight minutes. There was no wind blowing and, with a good pressure of water, the brigade extinguished the fire, but too late to save th© building. The electric power poles on the footpath were scorched and the wires fused. The house was insured for £ 285, and the furniture for £SO, in the London and Lancashire Company.
