POACHERS’ ACTIVITIES

TRESPASS ON GAME-STOCKED AREAS j ACCLIMATISATION DISCUSSIONS (From Our Otcn Correspondent) \ THAMES. Friday. \ Discussing: the wisdom of liberating I partridges over large areas as comi pared with private breeding, at the j Auckland Acclimatisation Society's meeting at Thames last evening. Mr. F. E. McKenzie, the president, said that the society had set free 300 birds at Matamata. They had disappeared in all direri tions and could not now be traced. As a result, the society was inclined to encourage private breeding. In reply. Mr. Glossing, of Thames, said that ho spoke from long experience when he said that there was not one man in New Zealand who could rear partridges. He asked the society for a liberal allocation for the Thames area. Finally it was to send f»0 brace of Chukor partridges to the Taringamutu area and 50 brace to the Thames, Waihi and Paeroa districts. Discussing the subject of gamestocked areas, and the depredations of poachers, Mr. McKenzie said that it was not generally known that it was illegal to trespass on these areas. The society was protected against such trespass by the Animal Protection Act. According to Mr. Jonassen, of Thames, game birds had been almost cleared out of the Hauraki Peninsula by poachers. The president announced that negotiations were going on for the liberation of opossums in the Auckland district. Last year the Wellington Society had made £2,000 from this branch of sport, and s&ch a revenue would give the Auckland Society a chance to do much for the sportsman. Mr. J. Hollinrake, of Matiihi, and Mr. C. Payze, of Matamata, were appointed honorary rangers.
