“PROMISING” MEN

LABOUR ON MR. COATES (From Our - Own Correspondent) DARGAVILLE, To-day. Notwithstanding boisterous weather, a large attendance was present at Mr. J. G. Barclay’s (Labour) meeting here last night. The Mayor, Mr. Jones, presided. The candidate received a splendid hearing, and frequently was applauded. He silenced one or tw% hecklers quite effectively. No questions were asked. The candidate said he favoured the bare majority on the Prohibition poll, and was against the Bible in schools. He contended that Reform was largely responsible for unemployment. He instanced cases where private persons and local bodies were not prepared to pay more thp.n 12s on contract or wages as a result of the relief rates. Mr. Coates, he said, was a most “promising” man. He had heard him promise things at Albany, and if he promised right throughout the electorate in the same manner, Kaipara was going to get a good many millions during the next few years. “I doubt if he would be able to fulfil those promises after the 14th.”
