First Day’s Winners Again Prominent

RACING AT WHANGAREI A strong nor’-wester and sliowery weather with occasional bursts of sunshine. were the conditions ruling at Whangarei on Saturday for the second and concluding day of the Whangarei Racing Club’s spring meeting. m consequence of following so closely on the recent Dargaville meeting at Avondale many trainers were not prepared to race their charges, the result being small fields on both day. thus adversely affecting the totalisator. I he machine put through £17,756 in comparison with £ 22.03 S on the corresponding day last year. For the meeting the investments amounted to £32,155, as against £40.942 last year, a decrease of £8,787. , . Notwithstanding the moderate totalisator returns, the meeting was well patronised, and keen racing witnessed, the track providing splendid going until about the fifth race. when, it became a bit greasy. A feature of the racing was the success of well-backed horses the dividends in each case, with hardly an exception, being on the small side. Mr F. L. Dunn, the acting-secretary, carried out his duties in an efficient and conscientious manner, leaving nothing for complaint, and he is to be warmly congratulated on the way the racing went off. Notes on the racing and details of the results follow. Kauri Handicap There -were eight runners in the first event, Kawiti and Gwairaka (the latter in favour of his stable companion, Fancy Boy) were the scratchings. Fancy Boy £423, Lucklaine £319 and Sulla £289 were the best supported. The favourite was one of the last to leave the barrier, Envoy leading out from Sulla and Furore, with Fancy Boy running up into fourth place at the end of a furlong. This was the order crossing the top, the leading trio being on terms. Envoy and Sulla turned for home together, followed by Fancy Boj r , Furore, Gazerin and Lucklaine. Half-way up the running Fancy Boy came through and went on to win nicely by a length and a-half from Envoy, with Sulla a short length away third. Gazerin was fourth, and then came Furore, Lucklaine and St. Ames, with Echelon last. Marsden Hack Air King, Bombarder and Viburnum declined their engagement, and of the ten left in Vallar, was made a very warm order with £BB3, others to claim friends being Frothblower £ 349 and Owairaka £ 322. The favourite and Hone Tleke began best from Exalted, Frothblower and Michael. At the end of a furlong Segment fell, and a little further on Abbey Queen lost her rider. Vallar led down the back from Exalted, Hone Heke, Frothblower and Michael, and the favourite was still doing it well in front at the home turn, where he was attended by Frothblower, Exalted, Michael and Hone Heke. The weight told on Vallar in the run home, and Frothblower soon got to him to win by half a length from Exalted, with Vallar a length away third. Then came Hone Heke, with Michael, Lord Abbey, Camp Prince and Owairaka. When Segment crashed he gave E. A. JKeesing a nasty fall, a dislocated collarbone being the extent of his injuries, sufficient to keep him out of the saddle for a few weeks. As a result of hie fall Segment sustained a broken leg and had to be destroyed. Poroti Hack Hurdles This race was run in heavy rain. Fane was withdrawn, leaving half a dozen runners. Ripon Abbey £664 and Wenday £563 monopolised the betting, with Mangani £ 358 heading the others. Ripon Abbey opened up a big gap early, but he led passing the stands by a couple of lengths from Wenday, with Miss Alma, Just Quiety, Clockwork and Mangani bunched another two lengths back. In the stretch down the back the favourite was just clear of Wenday, with Just Clockwork, Miss Alma and Mangani following, and this was the order in which they came round the home turn. Ripon Abbey held his own to win by a length from Wenday (who fenced slovenly), with Just Quietly another two lengths away. Clockwork was fourth and Mangani (who gave an indifferent display) fifth, Miss Alma chasing them. home. Park Handicap Four out of the six runners carried good money, with Siaosi £726 a firm first choice, and Papatu £ 514, Desert Glow £476 and Thursby £451 evenly backed. Siaosi led all the way. Going out of the straight there was little between the field, Siaosi making play from Desert Glow, Papatu, Te Monanui. Transformer and Thursby. There was no change in the order along the back, where the favourite held an advantage of two lengths. Siaosi turned for home clear of Desert Glow and Papatu, following them being Thursby, Transformer and Te Monanui. Once heads were turned for home Desert Glow challenged the favourite, but the nearest he could get was within a length of Siaosi. Papatu was nearly three lengths off third, with Transformer fourth, Thursby fifth, and Te Monanui last. President’s Handicap Tea Time was at a false price for the sprint, and his backers received another surprisingly good return. Awarere carried £846, against the winner’s £6ll, while Serang £345 was the only other to claim fair support. Baby Bun got the worst of the despatch, Tea Time leading out from Awarere, Ballymoy II and Serang. Along the back the favourite appeared to be interfered with and dropped back a couple of places. Tea Time led across the top and into the home stretch from Serang, Ballymoy II and Awarere. In the straight Serang challenged the leader, but failed to go on with it, Tea Time beating him by three parts of a length. Awarere was three lengths away, with Baby Bun fourth and Ballymoy II last. Kamo Handicap Sunny Morn £633, Kaiwanga £370. Exalted £2Bl and Right and Left £277 received most support. The walk-up start was effective, Fiery Lad being the first to become prominent from Sunny Morn, Glenetta, Turn, Exalted, Kildeer and Viburnum. Down the back the favourite and Exalted were on terms ahead of Glenetta, Fiery Lad. Viburnum and Kaiwanga, with Right and Left a long way back last. This was the order into the straight, Sunnv Morn going on to win again by a length and a-half. Right and Left put in a phenomenal run over the last furlong and a-half to get second, half a length f ™ nt of Exalted. Glenetta was fouith, and then came Kaiwanga. Blue bonnet and Illingar. Titoki Hack Mosque made up for his failure the fjjsf c L a y- He was again favourite, with £ 830. while there was also some money for Bombarder £B3O and Air King £ oil. Lucklaine got away very badly. Mosque and Air King hopping out together. Along the back Air King was in the van from Mosque, Bombarder, Brampton and Nassock. Crossing the top Mosque and Air King were on terms, and they were joined by Bombarder at the home turn, with

Brampton next. The three leaders had a great battle up the straight, but over the last little bit Mosque shot out to win by half a length from Air King. | with Bombarder weakening into third | place a length away. Nassock and j Brampton were next. Deserved His Win Consequent on going a good race in the Whangarei Cup, Sleepy Sol was in great demand for the Farewell Handicap, carrying £877. the next best backed being The Thorn £795. and Serang £472. Sleepy Sol was the first to break the line and he led out of the straight attended by Serang, The Thorn. Wenday, Auriculus and Master O’Rorke. but as they moved along the back, the last-named made a good run which landed him on terms with Sleepy Sol. this being the only change in the order. Master O’Rorke had charge as they crossed the top, but he was closely pursued by Sleepy Sol. Auriculus. The Thorn. Wenday and Serang. and that was the order as they swung into the liome-streteh. Once straightened up Serang came with a great burst and effectively settled Sleepy Sol. going on to win by three-quarters of a length. Wenday was a moderate third, a length away, and then came Auriculus, The Thorn and Master O’Rorke Inquiries and Protest The judicial committee was kept extremely busy. It is not often that a protest against a winner is lodged these days, but that was done in the case of the sprint winner. Tea Time. The protest was lodged on behalf of the connections of Serang, who finished second, on the grounds that in the straight the winner came across too quickly on Serang and interfered with the latter. After hearing the evidence the stewards decided to let the result stand. An inquiry into the falling of Segment (who had to be destroyed), and the unshipping of A. Stead, Abbey Queen’s apprentice jockey, at different stages of the Marsden Hack Handicap, was also held. In the case of Segment the verdict was that the fall was accidental. So far as Stead’s mishap was concerned it was found to have been brought about by Abbey Queen attempting to push through and getting on to the heels of Michael. WON £17,000 GOTHIC CARRIES ON RAMULUS AND BACCHUS WIN FLEMINGTON’S FINAL (United PA.—By Telegraph — Copyright) MELBOURNE, Sunday. The Victoria Racing Club’s spring meeting was concluded at Flemington yesterday, when there was a large attendance. The race track was in capital order, and some excellent contests eventuated. A feature of the racing was that two fresh time records were created. In the decision of the Batman Stakes Ramulus was always prominent, and won in easy style. He was trained and ridden by the ex-New Zealanders G. Price and M. McCarten respectively: McCarten was reprimanded for crossing the field too sharply with Ramulus at the start. Meadow King finished best in the Flemington Stakes, and won narrowly. When a yearling he was bought for 150 guineas. This was his
