Young Boys Arrested on Mount Mangere

POLICE LIE IN WAIT SUSPECTED OF THEFT AND DAMAGE Two boys, one aged 14 and the other 15, were arrested on the top of Mount Mangere late on Saturday afternoon. They will face charges of unlawfully converting two motor-cars to their town use, breaking and entering the store of Mr. R. Forbes, Edendale Road, and damaging several telephone booths at Onehunga. It is ‘believed that the boys were on remand for other charges as well as those which they will have to face as a result of their arrest on Saturday. A motor-car which had been reported missing on Friday night led to the arrest of the two boys. It had been taken from V.' ikefield Street. m Late on Saturday afternoon tn© car was found on the top of Mount Mangere, beyond Onehunga, with a punctured tyre. The police were communicated with, and Detective Knight, Acting-Detective Davis and Constable McLennan went out to make investigations. POLICE KEEP WATCH Convinced that if they waited they would apprehend the culprits, the officers kept watch on the top of the mount. About an hour later they saw another motor-car approaching. They saw two boys leave it at the scoria pit and climb the hill toward them. One of the boys was carrying a jack with which they had proposed to lift the damaged car. As soon as the boys reached the motor-car which was on top of the mount the detectives arrested them. HIDDEN FOOD A large quantity of provisions, including cake, biscuits, butter, eggs, cheese and soft drinks, said to have been taken from Mr. Forbes’s shop, was found hidden under an overcoat and some grass on the top of the hill, near the motor-car. Other goods were found under a rock not far away. Both boys had a large number of pennies in their possession. The theft of the goods from Mr. Forbes’s shop, the stolen cars and the damage to the telephone boxes were reported in The Sun on Saturday. The first clue to the trace of the boys was the fact that a trail of damage and thefts had been left in the direction the cars had When it was reported that one car was found on Mount Mangere, the police had something definite to work on and followed up the clue very quickly. The two boys appeared before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., , this morning, and were remanded to appear at the Children’s 'Court on Saturday.
