BRICKLAYER’S SCHEME FINED £5 FOR FRAUD Nathaniel Cameron Gow wanted m gramophone, but did not want to worry about paying for it. He was charged at the Police Court this morning with forging the name of John Armstrong to a hire-purchase agreement/ On the suggestion of Chief-Detective Hammond, the charge was amended to false pretences, and Gow pleaded guilty. Mr. Hammond submitted that Gow, a bricklayer, aged 43. had bought a gramophone from a city firm, paying 5s down on a £3B machine. Gow had made none of the 153 payments of 5s required of him, and it had been discovered that he had signed the hirepurchase agreement with the name John Armstrong to avoid being traced. “Gow has not been here, since 1917,” concluded Mr. Hammond. “He is a single man, living with his mother.” Gow was fined £5, being given a week to pay.
