Although he admitted drink was responsible for his arrest, John Scrimshaw, middle-aged, was not prepared to be prohibited when charged with the theft of 18s. in the Police Court to-day. According to the police accused had been associating with James Hamilton, a farm labourer who arrived in town recently with £9O, all of which was now gone. Hamilton gave Scrimshaw £1 in a fish-shop to get a bottle of brandy. After buying the spirit Scrimshaw decamped with the change. “Oh, it’s not necessary, Is it?” asked accused, when Mr. Wyvern Wilson suggested a prohibition order. “I’ve met your kind before,” commented the magistrate in sentencing accused to 48 hours’ imprisonment.
