CHEERS AND APPLAUSE
SIR JAMES GUNSON AT AVONDALE TRANSPORT PROBLEMS Cheers and applause and a motion of thanks and confidence were unanimously given Sir James Gunson. Reform candidate for Auckland Suburbs, at the conclusion of an enthusiastic meeting addressed by him at Victoria Hall. Avondale Flats, on Saturday evening. Mr. E. E. Copsey presided over an audience which packed the building. Dealing with tho subject of transport, a subject which vitally exercised tho minds of those in the electorate. Sir James said that during the campaign ho had refrained from personalities. but as one of the other candidates had made certain assertions- and implications ho felt bound to defend himself. “Regarding the Motor Omnibus Act,” said Sir James, “I will state - once again that I had left the Town Hal! —in fact I was abroad —when the Act was brought down.” Referring to the regulations concerning buses in Queen Street the candidate said: “The fi.rst thing I knew about the bus proposals was when the committee reported to the City Council with recommendations. In tho first place the traffic department reported to the Tramways Committee. I can assure you, however, that, in the event of my success in this election, I will wholeheartedly associate myself with tho people of this district in connection with tlieir transport problems.” Dealing with the value of the great industries of the country Sir James emphasised the paramount importance of agriculture. “We must not, however, forget our secondary industries,” he added. “I am in favour of building up those which are economically sound.”
