DEVELOPING LAND
GOVERNMENT’S POLICY EXPLAINED REFORM MAN AT WESTMERE When he spoke to a large meeting at Westmere last evening Mr. P. B. Fitzherbert, Reform candidate for Grey Lynn, explained the policy of the Government in settling land and stimulating production. The candidate received a favourable hearing. He maintained that the aims of the Labour Party could not be attained in New Zealand. Socialism was diametrically opposed to the fundamental desires and ambitions of the people. Referring to the United Party, Mr. Fitzherbert said Sir Joseph Ward had accepted leadership immediately after his return to New Zealand, and had launched his £70,000,000 borrowing scheme. It was clear that the party as a whole had had no time to investigate the details of the proposal. The credit of New Zealand, continued the candidate, was at its apex. This was the result of the good management of Mr. Downie Stewart. He would be in a better position to secure loans in London than Sir Joseph Ward. A vote of thanks was accorded the candidate. Mr. S. Turkington was chairman.
