SIR D. SERGEANT HURT
LEG BROKEN BY FALL IN AUSTRALIA IN ‘FIFTIES (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Friday. Sir David Serjeant, who is 98 years of age, bent down to pick up an article from the floor, and overbalanced. He fell, and broke his leg. and is now in a critical condition in hospital. Sir David voyaged tn Anstra 1 ’ • 3 852, the trip taking 82 days. Later he was ill in a crime uusirml, a.i —- then canvas town of Melbourne, with a corpse on either side of him, and the nurse dead drunk. Sir David was a paperhanger, gardener, painter, conveyancer, and builder’s labourer before returning to London in 1859 to resume his medical training. Sir David Maurice Serjeant, who was created a knight in 1922, is a well-known physician and surgeon. While in Australia in the ’so’s he played in the two first intercolonial cricket matches, and is the only survivor of the 22 players. At one time he was in the P. and O. medical service.
