(Continued.) AWAPUNI NOTES

the levin meeting TRAINING OPERATIONS (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON Is*., Friday. ! With representatives to the number ! of 40 figuring at next week, activities at Awapuni are brisk, and, with Otaki and Feilding immediately following, local mentors are sending their charges along. Conditions were excellent for operations yesterday morning, for although there was a heavy dew on the grass in the early morning, the tracks were tir it. and fast. The flags, however, were some 40 feet out from the rails on the grass proper. Moutoa Treasury, who had to decline her Trentham engagements owing to a bad back, is quite herself again, and she ran half a mile under a hard pull in 54. The Paper Money filly had as a companion the Gasbag—Moutoa’s Gift three-year-old filly, who has been accorded the cognomen of Moutoa Flame. The youngster is developing along attractive lines, and she is due to have her first race with the colours up at Levin. Kempsey, Blimp and Wanderlust, three members of G. New’s team, were sent along in company on the plough to leave seven furlongs behind them in 1.43 without being hurried. Vaucleuse and Teremoana jumped off at the six furlong peg on the grass to negotiate the distance in 1.24 J. Vaucleuse got the better of the hop out. > but the Rangitero gelding was on ! terms at the post. The pair are prospective candidates for maiden honours at Levin. May Do Better Skyrider, who just failed to break her maiden status at the Manawatu Hunt fixture, will bo afforded another opportunity of so doing at Levin. The chestnut daughter of Lay Comet commands a good turn of speed, but appears to lack constitution. Novar and Imperial Spark were restricted to steady work on the plough. Both figure in the Cup nominations at Levin, but the former is also engaged in the hurdle event and, should he start therein, the SSarto gelding may prove difficult to dispose of, for he has already demonstrated at exercise that he can jump. Incidentally, J. Coyle, the trainer of Novar. has the Bronzetti —Brolly gelding. Mii#ter Gamp (with whom he won the Mamlkau ’Hack Hurdles at Levin last year at his first essay over the battens), back in work. The chestnut is looking well conditioned as the result of his spell since the Great Northern Hurdles. Keddar, one of the septette figuring in the McLonald Memorial Handicap at Levin, which has been furnished by local stables, ran along over six furlongs on the grass in 1.22 2-5. On the basis of his Wanganui showing Keddar's turn should not be long. Inflame got the best of a ragged jump out from Somes and Jiu Jazz, and the Lord Quex gelding was well clear at the finishing point, running the half-mile in 541. Somes followed him home with the half-sister by Tribulation to Ring Boy beaten off. Inflame and Jiu Jazz are entered for the Hokio Hack Handicap at Levin, and while the former is apt to stop quickly, he might see out the five furlongs. The light-framed Holus Bolus ran home from the three-furlong peg in tho smart time of 39. If the Boniform gelding would only live up to his track work, he would prove a useful stake earner. Although he was entered for both the Weraroa and Mako Mako Handicaps at Levin, the presence of his stable companion, Moutoa Treasury. in the former event may result in his preferring the latter contest. Two For Levin Kalos and Grand National are the only members of Miss Maher’s team claiming engagements at Levin, the former being top-weight in the Lake Hack Handicap, run over a mile and a distance. The Boniform gelding was not asked to gallop yesterday morning, his work being restricted to the plough. Miss Maher has received a half-brother to Kalos in Glendhu, who claims Kilbroney as his sire. A compact sort, the three-year-old is a bay in colour, whereas Kalos is a chestnut. Locarno, Hillation and Red Fuchsia were other members of Miss Maher’s team who were given useful tasks on the plough. Hillation is a good stamp animal who should develop into a chaser next season. Red Fuchsia had to be turned out after the Grand National meeting, but he was so full of t 9 .that his mentor deemed it wise to bring him back into work earlier than had been intended. Piuthair continues to go along in her work in a satisfactory manner, and H would bo indeed pleasing to find this good mare regain her old-time lorni. The Isix-year-old daughter of ktlbroney and Black Ada completed a circuit of light exercise by picking up Hymestrason at tho six-furlong post r un the last five furlongs in 1.7. The half-sister to Piuthair, Callanmore, was galloped from the threeiurlong post, this speed merchant coming home in 39. It is indeed unfortunate that the Absurd gelding’s operations will always be restricted as Tiie result of a faulty respiratory organs. Although Callanmore and Piuthair-are both entered for the McDonald Memorial Handicap—the open event at Levin —it will probably be found that the former will dec‘ ln ® bis engagement and his elder stable mate given the benefit of an outing. Kilmiss and Wyeford, the latter being a Warplane gelding who has been taken in hand by L. Knapp for The Hunterville sportsman, Mr. S. R. Hammond, the owner of Puwhero and mat other former good one. Ardath, f a i loped five furlongs on the plough ° ru . n . the distance in about I.B—a Promising effort for a maiden who a «ru n °t been long up. inree youngsters in Statuary (Leighton—Statuette), Killogie (Kilbroney—Temba), and the Lord Quex — Havonne filly, the first pair being Pupils of G. Jones and the last-named one of the quintette originally received by R. K. Hatch from Mr. W. rf* Stead, of Hawke’s Bay. for educauonal purposes, were sent along over hree furlongs, to run the distance in 2; Statuary, although still on the •mall side, gives evidence of possesses her dam’s pace. The Jumpers Although getting on in years, the in 4 a e ® ve gelding Pinna, who is now , A. E. Neale's hands, is giving evis, vl ce °* coming back into form. When v« over four flights of fences .csterday he negotiated the obstacles eu. x. Stokes is now attached to mat stable. American Pillar was likewise sent

along over four flights of battens and the Sir Frisco g<jjding gives indication of coming right with greater experience. 110 jumps cleanly, if somewhat on the big side. Vexatious, who had to be content with a fourth and a third at Wellington, was not asked to jump yesterday, the Thurnham mare being given steady work on the plough. With the improvement in the going which might well bo expected in future the chestnut should be capable of improving on her Wellington performances. Elicit (H. Gordon) and Grand National (A. McDonald) set a solid pace over a couple of rounds of the battens, the pair putting up an attractive performance. Elicit is a big rangy type, who has a good turn of speed, but his companion will represent the stable in the hurdle event at Levin. Elysianor (J. Blanche) had Roburant (C. Bracken) as a companion on a round over the battens, but the Absurd gelding was too careful at his fences to be of any use as a partner, to Elysianor, who drew right away. Home Made, Sunart and Red Bank, three inmates of L. Knapp’s stable, were associated in a round on the plough, the trio finishing on terms in 1.44 without being pressed. Sunart is entered for the Manakau Hurdles at Levin and the 1924 New Zealand Cup winner should put forward a bold showing, for he has improved materially since the Hunt fixture at Awapuni. Kilia, from the same stable, is also in the race.
