IMPRISONED OFFICER

TREATMENT BY PORTUGtIfSE QUESTION IN COMMONS British Official Wireless RUGBY, Wednesday. A question was asked in the Houee of Commons as to what action the Government was taking with the Portuguese Government about the delay which took place in holding the trial of Mr. Brewer, second officer of the steamer Clan Lamont. He was charged with theft at Lobito Bay, Portuguese West Africa. His sentence was was 360 days’ imprisonment and a fine of £lB, or a further 60 days’ imprisonment. This was considered too severe. Mr. G. F. Locker-Lampson, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, replied that the British Ambassador at Lisbon had addressed strong representations to the Portuguese Government, which had promised an immediate investigation. As Brewer, for the first few days after his arrest, was detained in the local hospital, where he had enjoyed considerable freedom, there was no cause for complaint about the conditions of his incarceration.
