IRRIGATING GRASS PASTURES PUKEKOHE EXPERIMENTS (From Our Own Correspondent) The possibility of profitably irrigating farming lands has for some time past been the subject of consideration by the Franklin Electric-Power Board. Communicating relative to a recent trial the Department of Agriculture, which is working in conjunction with the board, intimated to this week’s meeting of the board that the recent trial proved very successful, but that some difficulty had arisen regarding the extension of the experiment to grass land. In the opinion of the officer in charge of the fields division, Mr. P. W. Smallfield, the spraying of grass was far more likely to be economically successful than the spraying of crops. A 4in growth of young pasture would yield 30cwt of grass per acre, which would produce 30 to 401 b of butter-fat of a value of between £2 5s and £3. With spraying he anticipated a 4in growth every 12 to 14 days, so that in the months of January and February they should yield in the vicinity of five feedings, as compared with one or one and a-half from unsprayed grass land, an increase of approximately £9 10s an acre. The return

from grass would be greater than from crops, because in normal years the rainfall was adequate. The irrigation sub-committee was asked to investigate as to whether the experiment could be extended to grass land and to advise the department of the probable cost of spraying a four-acre field. The engineer was authorised to expend up to £SO on additional experiments, and it was agreed to apply to the department for a gram. It was stated that the minimum power charges could be made operative by pumping at night. HAURAKI PLAINS DAIRYING (From Our Own Correspondent. ) A very tine record of dairy production is shown for Hauraki Plains iu the October report of the New Zealand Co-op. Herd Testing Association which embraces 67 groups containing 54,140 cows. The Shelly Beach group (Kopuaralii) has the record for the highest production of fat in any group with an average from its 302 cows of 38.151 b. while, in the production of milk, the Ngatea and the Waitakaruru groups share the honour of second place in the 67 groups with 8961 b milk in the 30-day period. The Ngatea group also has the honour of only being baten for the highest herd average by one quarter of a pound of fat. This herd of 45 cows produced an average of 50.361 b of fat. A Patetonga cow with a production for the month of 951 b fat divides with a Te Rapa cow the honour of being second best cow in the 54,140 tested by the association, being 6fb below the outstanding animal.
