“Ernie” Mair Again
Is Now the Big Man in Queensland Swimming QUESTION OF AMATEUR STATUS Ernie Mair, colourful personality in League football, has again bobbed up in the sporting world. He caused a mild sensation last month by beating D. S. Carter for the presidency of the Queensland Amateur Swimming Association, despite the latter’s 28 years’ service to the sport. Mair’s qualifications to hold this position have been queried on the ground that a question of professionalism was involved in his appointment as manager of the Maoriland League team which toured England a year or two ago. E.H.M., however, vigorously repudiates the suggestion, stating that his appointment was an honorary one. Mair is certainly a great enthusiast for whatever sport he takes up, and his liberality has had a great deal tc do with the swimming boom in Toowoomba, his home town.
