WHANGAREI RACES

DESERT GLOW’S CUP SPRINT TO TEA TIME VALLAR AND BOMBARDER SCORE In ideal weather the Wliangarei Club had a lot in its favour for the opening of its spring meeting at Wliangarei yesterday, and a fairly large crowd gathered to witness what proved to be an excellent afternoon’s sport. The course was in great order, the Cup being run at a fast pace. Desert Glow was the victor, while the sprint event was captured by Tea Time. The totalisator handled £14.<>99. against £18,904 on the opening day of j the last spring meeting, a decrease yesterday of £4.504. The management of the sport was high-class, and everything went off without any untoward incident. The Ellerslie trainer, J. Williamson, turned out three winners during the afternoon —Vallar. Bombarder and The Thorn. Notes on the racing and full results follow: Spring Plate A field of nine paraded for the opening event, and easily the best was Mussie, who lost a little ground at the start and then won easily. Envoy £327 was a firm favourite, with the next best backed pair—Mussie £ 204 and St. Ames £l60 —at nice prices. The start was not good. Envoy and Lucklaine showed out early and they led along the back from Snowdrift, Mussie, Viburnum and Owairaka. With half the journey covered Lucklaine, Mussie and Owairaka were on terras ahead of the favourite. This was also the order into the straight, halfway up the running Mussie began to assert herself, finally scoring comfortably by a couple of lengths from Owairaka., who went a good race. A length and a-half back Envoy was third, and then came Lucklaine, St. Ames and Viburnum. The winner did her part well; she is a full sister to Scat. Kensington Hack Handicap There was a rush to be on Vallar in the hack sprint, and he carried £5.51. being backed right down to a particularly short price. Of the others. Air King £323 and Abbey Queen £l9l were fairly well supported. Air King and Vallar began smartly, and at the end of a furlong the favourite was in front from Air King, Camp Prince, Abbey Queen and Sulla. This order was practically maintained as the field crossed the top, and at the home turn Vallar was clear of Abbey Queen and Air King, with Sulla and Segment at. the head of the remainder. Once in line it was virtually a one-horse race, Vallar winning under a pull by two lengths from Air King, who was the same distance in front of Frothblower, an outsider. Abbey Queen faded into fourth position, and she was followed home by Sulla, Segment and Michael. The winner was a class above his opponents. Huanui Hurdles Ripon Abbey was made a warm order in the Hurdles, being entrusted with £551, nearly twice as much as the next best backed, Wenday £282, with Mangani carrying £230. The favourite early went to the front, leading over the first fence from Lord Abbey, Just Quietly, Clockwork and Mashoor. Passing the stands Ripon Abbey held command a couple of lengths in front of Just Quietly, with Mangani (pulling hard), Mashoor, Lord Abbey and Clockwork next in order. Down the back the favourite had drawn out six lengths in front of Lord Abbey, Mangani, Mashoor and Just Quietly lying handy, and at the home turn he was still bowling along nicely three lengths ahead of Mangani, with Mashoor and Clockwork next. Ripon Abbey did not have much difficulty in going out to win by two and a-half lengths from Mangani. Five lengths away was Just Quietly, with Mashoor, Wenday, Miss Alma, Clockwork and Lord Abbey next to cross the line. Nothing had a show of heading the winner. Wenday was unlucky, her rider losing an iron. Whangarei Cup All started in the big event. Papatu £702 was made a warm order, best backed of the remainder being Desert Glow £483, Mint Leaf £261 and Thursby £229. the others being at good odds. Mint Leaf and Papatu were the first to show out, but then Sleepy Sol took up the running, and he was making play past the stands, attended by Siaosi, Thursby, Mint Leaf, Papatu. Transformer and Desert Glow, the horses not being at long intervals. This order was maintained right along the back, and it was not until crossing the top was there any altertaion, other than that Deser Glow moved up to fifth place, the last two being Transformer and Papatu. Siaosi was in front at the home turn from Sleepy Sol. Mint Leaf, Desert Glow and Thursby. It was a fine race home, with Desert Glow the first to collar the leaders, while Papatu was making a fine run from the back. Desert Glow hung on to beat Papatu by a neck, while Siaosi was only threequarters of a length further back. Mint Leaf, who had every chance, was a good fourth, with Thursby and Transformer next, and Sleepy Sol last. The pace was on and the time for the race was a record. Papatu was bit unlucky, for he had a lot of ground to make up in the short straight. County Handicap The biggest field of the day contested the race confined to district horses, best backed being Kildeer £ 448. Exalted £324 and Kaiwanga £321. while the eventual winner carried £156. Fiery Lad was the pacemaker from Kildeer. Sunny Morn, Exalted. Glenetta and Kaiwanga. The order was the same along the back, but crossing the top Sunny Moon took charge and piloted Fiery Lad. Kaiwanga and Exalted into the straight. Sunny Morn retained his advantage to win nicely by a length and a-half from Exalted, who beat Kaiwanga by half a length for second money. Right and Left was fourth, and Fiery Lad, Blue Bonnet, Glenetta and Virburnum next. Te Monanui looked well, but failed to show up at any part of the race. Hikurangi Hack All six acceptors lined up for the Hikurangi Hack Handicap, and there was a spirited duel for favouritism between Mosque £483 and Bombarder £463, while there was also good support forthcoming for Nassock £383. Brampton got the best of the despatcli and led round the bend from Segment, Illingar and Bombarder. and in this order they raced along the back, followed by Nassock and Mosque. Crossing the top Brampton was still the pilot (an unusual role for him), and he turned for home in front of Illingar. Bombarder, Mosque and Segment. Once straightened up Bombarder set after the leader, but Brampton kept going and it was only on the post that Bombarder got in front to obtain a half-head victory. Mosque also finished well three parts of a length away, and then came Nassock. Illingar and Segment. Manaia Handicap The five acceptors lined up for the sprint, and there was never any doubt as to what was going to be favourite. It was Awarere, who carried £7S4. while Tea Time was entrusted with £493 and Oration and Ballymoy II with £l3B each. Tea Time began brilliantly from Awarere, Serang, Ballymoy II and Oration, and so they raced along the back. Crossing the top Serang and Awarere were in the van and they

piloted Tea Time into the straight. The last named came with a rattle and finished under the judge’s box to beat Awarere by a neck. Serang was three parts of a length away third, and then i come Oration and Ballymoy 11. Parahaki Handicap There had been many close finishes during the afternoon, but it was left to the final event to supply a deadheat. Best backed were Auriculus £754, The Thorn £625 and Master O’Rorke £322. All went away to a good start, and at the end of a furlong Wenday was making play from Baby Bun. The Thorn, Scat, Auriculus and Master O’Rorke. Going along the back Wenday increased her advantage and nearing the top was two lengths clear of The Thorn, Scat, Auriculus, Baby Bun and Master O’Rorke. Wenday was still showing the way to The Thorn, Auriculus and Scat as they turned for home, but in the run to the post The Thorn gradually overhauled her and in a great finish got up to dead-heat. Scat, who could make no impression on the leaders, was third, a length away, and following him were Auriculus and Baby Bun. SPRING PLATE Of £120; 6 furlongs 2—MUSSIE (P.
