The Japanese freighter, Choyo Maru, returned to Victoria. British Columbia, after fighting mountainous seas for a thousand miles on her way to Japan. Half her navigating gear had been swept away, and the ship had a heavy list to starboard. She was battered to the limit of her endurance. One member of the crew was dead, and five were injured. The third mate was fatally hurt when a 60ft wave struck the ship on October 20, and was only saved from a watery grave by Captain Murai risking his life on the bridge after the wheelhouse and five ladders had gone.
