VARSITY ELECTION
MR. BALDWIN GLASGOW’S NEW RECTOR FRAGRANT AMMUNITION (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON", Saturday. The Glasgow University rectorial election resulted: Mr. Stanley Baldwin (Conserva“ve> 1,044 Mr. Cunningham Graham (Scottish Nationalist) 973 Mr. Herbert Samuel (Liberal) .. 396 Mr. Rosslyn Mitchell (Labour) 226 The women's votes turned the scale in favour of Mr. Baldwin. The after intervention of the Nationalist group gave unexpected interest to the election. Sixty thousand rotten eggs, thousands of cods’ heads and other ammunition were expended by the election combatants who were dressed in blue overalls, football attire, etc. The women students polled at a booth some distance from the “battle ground.” NEW PARTY IN SCOTLAND Apart from the usual “ragging,” the chief interest in the Glasgow University rectorial election was the fact that the well-known author, Cunninhame Graham, who stood as a Scottish Nationalist, polled within 66 votes of Mr. Baldwin’s total. It is stated that the Scottish Nationalists intend to contest the future Parliamentary elections in Scotland, independent of the three great political parties. The party bases its appeal on the alleged neglect of nationalist interest in the Parliament at Westminster.
