MANUKAU ROVERS

RUGBY PRIZE-GIVING SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL BALL "There is no reason why the Manukau Rovers Football Club should not become, before long, the premier Rugby club in the Auckland Province,” said Mr. Harry Frost, chairman of the Auckland Rugby Union, at the annual prize-giving function and ball held on Saturday evening in the Orpheus Hall, Onehunga. In presenting the trophies won last season, Mr. J. E. Green, president of the club, referred to the fact that for the first time in the club’s history it had been represented in a Dominion team by the selection of Falwasser and Rata in the team which met the Waratalis. The committee, he said, had had grave misgiving on the question of entering the senior competition last season, but the result had fully justified its action. The Manukau team had contributed to more than one thrilling match on Eden Park, and although finishing but third in the competition, had actually beaten the champion team, while no fewer than six of its players had been selected for interprovincial matches. The club had further secured third place in the Southland shield competition. Of the teams entered for each of the eight grades only one was unplaced, one was third and five were second. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES Medals for the most improved players in the respective grades were Awarded as follow: Seventh grade A: Bunny Brimble and J. McMahon; seventh grade B. T. Bolton; sixth grade, James Somerville, Charles Treanor and B. Hamilton: fifth grade. Roy Quinlan; fourth grade, E. Ansell; third grade, C. Pepper: second grade, Samuel Pearce: senior grade, Steve Watene. Championship caps were presented to the following seventh grade players: W. Brimble (captain). Aldred. Backhurst, Melrose, McMahon, Dunster, Bolton, McLaren, McCarthy. Swanson. Tnru, Henderson. Burridge, Pert. Singleton, Duff, Moton, Truscott and Holloway. A. Falwasser and M. Kahn received Auckland representative caps. Walter Brimble accepted the Dodd Cup, and the club captain, Mr. R. Pepper, took the Jordan Cup. won by the club in matches against other clubs in the Manukau electorate. Mr. H. Frost presented a handsome gold medal to Mr. Jlov Heighway. sen., vice-president, in recognition of his services to the club. Some 200 couples who were present spent the remainder of the evening by dancing.
